Afternoon all, I got called out to a job which had a faulty rcd not tripping at x1, so rcd will need to be replaced, what certificate should be issued along side replacing the rcd, would it be a full EIC with just the rcd times, or a Minor works :s

Id probably go with MWC do global IR and rcd tests and leave it at that no point making work for yourself.

Do you really need ANY certificate for a like for like repair?

You'll be saying you need to issue a certificate for replacing a broken light switch next.

I personally only issue certificates when I do some wiring, be that new wiring or alterations to wiring.

Have I been doing wrong?

With something like a RCD its more to cover your own back and prove it was operational when you left it. For the 2 minutes it takes i dont see the problem. Obviously certs for some replacements are pointless.

Reasons why I personaly issue MWC for this type of work:

  1. Looks proffessional to the customer.
  2. Next guy in will think twice about slating your work.
  3. You have some paper work prooving your test readings in case of any unforseen events in the future.
  4. peice of mind all round.
  5. fills the envelope when put in with the invoice so making the inflated postage stamp cost worth while.

But as you say no need if you dont want to.

I have the same problem

Installing new circuit for double oven, test rcd before energising, no trip,

I'm going back on Friday to replace rcd so called Napit technical today who tell me that there isn't a requirement to certify a changed rcd, if I wanted to, then a mwc would be sufficient, there would be no need to test any of the outgoing circuits on the existing board that have not been modified, but his advice was to certify the new circuit I was installing and note the rcd replacement on that Cert

wooly,

I "think" the idea behind doing an MWC for an RCD replacement is wrt the required disconnection times.

I tend to use "sitework" sheets, so I may be tempted to record the relevant data on that, so it is traceable, thus proving you confirmed the disconnection times.

But given the fact that disconnection times on all of the circuits on the rcd side has now changed, it should be certified I personally think

Zs would vary with any material change, no? Albeit marginally. Internal resistances between old & new components will vary a tad surely. Playing Devil's Advocate then, how about this, you fit a new RCD and forget to tighten up the outgoing terminals fully (I know, a shooting offence). You test the new RCD with the load disconnected and all looks good but the Zs is way up......

Testing and CERTIFYING after any change, however minor is IMHO belt and braces and ensures traceability.

(Just DON'T ask me if I'd do it for a cracked switch.............. :coat )
