a quick answer would be appreciated on this as im due to meet this guy tomorrow

i was asked to complete an extension started by another spark who has since become very busy

spent a day fault finding his work and completed a mwc for the work done to the kitchen ringmain.

also had to upgrade the old incoming leakage device for the 'cheapest' option as requested, replaced it with a 80A 30mA rcd

was due to go back next week to complete but owner now thinks im too expensive (see how much should i charge thred)

the whole installation needs to be signed off but all ive done is to modify a ringmain and completed mwc and replaced the incoming rcd, i cant certify the firts fix done by someone else so what do i need to do now to cover my bottom???

thanks chaps..

sign off your part only. and maybe stick a little not that you have not done work to (whatever other spark has done), so they cant try and claim you done it

MWC for your bit only,,

as Andy says a note with the cert clarifying what you actually did

and possible get him to sign it showing that he agrees

Hmmmmm, I wonder why he's busy :^O

I've been in this position before and issued certs with big note saying first fix performed by someone else, hence I cannot be responsible for its compliance where I can't see it (or words to that effect). Have to say that my client was a decent repeat customer, whereas you seem to have landed an idiot, and I wouldn't bother unless he pays for work done, and possibly certs upfront. I would charge at least

I am sorry you have got lumbered with this job betty. I would never put one RCD especially 30mA as main switch it is just going to cause problems at some point. It does not comply with 17th regs and you will be liable if something goes wrong. Why do these people have work done if they cannot pay to have it done right it makes my blood boil. I think all you can do is cert the work you have done. I would call your part p provider and get some advice from them. I would not want to sign of somebody elses work off and I don't think you can.

thanks lads, greatly appreciated, i have already itemised an invoice stating what i have done and not done and as for the main incoming rcd it was their choice as the cost of cu replacement was to dear for them...

with it being a tt system and a knackered earth leakage unit that wouldnt trip i felt this was my only option to cover the work the kitchen fitter was doing.

Well if it trips and won't go back in they can pay somebody else to sort it out. I don't think you will be going back.

as above you cant notify some one elses work, by doing so your increasing the actually increasing the amount of cowboys around.

i would ignore the other works and just invoice for the work done, itemise the work and add not completed due to customer running out of funds for the project and advise what is needed to complete the project. ticket the CU next inspection in 1 week.

get him to sign your copy and save for future reference.

I have done this:^O

The customer went mad when he saw I had put 1 month for the next test!

I told him I was not prepared to verify some builders, second cousins work just my own.

This may, or may not, be useful to you but I ALWAYS take a digital camera with me and photograph the installation before I start any work and again after I have finished. Then, if there is any dispute as to what I am responsible for, out come the piccy's. Also useful if someone modifies your work at a later date.

ONLY sign off the work that you have done yourself. A photo showing how it was when you arrived and another photo showing how it was when you left is worth its' weight in gold in any subsequent dispute.

I wish I had a camera on a recent job I did, I did the first fix and completed the second fix with the exception of the outside power and lights.

On my certificate I put that this was carried out by some other person and was not part of the installation. (again the customer thought I had become too expensive and was trying to cut corners).

The evidence came in the type of cable used, and the way the cables had been terminated. I told him I was going to report him to building control but never heard anything else from him.

A camera would have been most usefull on this occasion.

Builder are all hassle. I would rather not work than work for a builder again

I would have put something along the lines of ' Tempoary RCD insalled after kitchen works prior to next stage work'

Then you are covered, with a 'RCD on whole installation' departure

To pi$$ him off you could laminate the cert- he has to make serious efforts to add or remove comments then :^O
