an update: we've got pretty much used to lamps/torchlight over the last fortnight due to a host of other problems taking priority, and while there were bigger problems around, all the best-laid plans described above have gone out of the window and none of us have sought to get anything sorted.

the circuit breaker in question has been off for 10 days or so.

now i'm back on it. i thought that before i called an electrician i'd check the intermittent problem was still manifesting; i reset the breaker at 2pm today, and it has remained on without any sign of tripping ever since. so i'm a bit puzzled. the only strange thing that happened was that a bulb went out in the bathroom - i thought to myself "there goes the breaker" but all the other lights were fine. i changed the bulb and it was back in action. when i put the 'faulty' bulb into a lamp, however, it was working.

i'm not sure what to do now. advice welcome. in the background i'm working on getting the rodent problem sorted once and for all, but is leaving the breaker on a massive risk at the moment? is it still worth getting it looked at even if the symptom has vanished?

please don't reply if you're just going to have a go at me for not getting an electrician in over the last fortnight. it's been quite a horrible time for me with various things, so i could really do without it, thanks :) .

1. Kill rodents

2. Get an electrician to test and make sure your electrics are safe.

It's a small cost for your family's safety.

I am sorry that you are having a bad time but a wiring fault will not get better on its own.

We have all tried our best in the previous posts to assit you as best we can but really there is only one way you will get this resolved, and that is to call in a competent Electrician to locate the cause and solve this problem.

To ignore this may well lead to more serious consequences which could bring greater troubles to your door.

Bite the bullett and call an Electrician, PLEASE.

but is leaving the breaker on a massive risk at the moment?
not to scare you or anything, but have a read through this thread. (skip to post 6 for the cable damage) then decide if you want to risk it or not (whilst the cause of the fault may be different, the results can be the same)

bathroom light...

turn the breaker off, and have a good look at the fitting.

any signs of burning around the cables?

what sort of light is it?

I am not sure what you are asking now?

As far as I see it....

1/ There was a fault that as far as you know has not been cleared.

2/ Electrical faults could either be a bit inconvenient, burn your home down, electrocute you till your are no more.

3/ Without any actual test results, e.g. insulation resistance, earth continuity etc.. it is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to suggest anything different from what has already been said.

4/ No matter how long you wait it will not make it any easier for any of us the have any better idea without some proper tests being carried out.

5/ Either hire the test meter yourself and do the tests required by BS7671 OR pay someone to do it.. then tell us what the results are and we can advise futher...

6/ If its any consolation many of us on here have a lot of other problems and issuers to resolve, times are tough and complicated, but no matter how long we wait.. the problems NEVER resolve themselves!

7/ Toss a coin..

if Heads.. read {"no problem everything will be fine"}

if Tails.. read {"no it looks like some remedial work is needed"}

if lands on rim... read {"problem has miraculously solved itself"}

8/ Right I give in ...

Which answer did you want to hear???

:C :C
