Great link thanks for that, might come in handy.

I was doing a kitchen on Monday, came to the light, took down the old florry, only to find it's fed with 2 core flex and no earth.

Customer had a nice new metal light fitting so I had to break the bad news about it needing an earth.

I left him to the task of lifting the laminate flooring in the bedroom above. I'm going back on Thursday to take the floor up and find the origin of the flex and hopefully an earth to go with it.

Perhaps if I had known about that site, It might have been easier just to get him to buy a different light fitting.

This is one of the times when 'B.U.M. Cam' comes in handy! I had this situation, put camera up hole, saw a ceiling rose, smacked a hole in the ceiling that could be covered by the new fitting. Luckily the rose had a connected earth in it,.......simples [well it was in this case!]................. :coat

The ceiling has been clad in wooden planks. There's just a 2 core flex emerging through a hole.

I determined the direction the cable came from, and drilled another hole as far over as possible (so both holes would be covered by the new light fitting) only to find the flex dissapearing further in the same direction.

So it was a choice between trash the ceiling, or wait for the owner to lift the laminate flooring above.

Almost certainly a ceiling rose further along covered now by the planking.

Memory failure as usual.

How does this tie in with the reg requiring an earth to be taken to all points?

Can't remember the number or even if this is the exact wording.

Too late now.

Off in a bit, have some eyelids to inspect the interior of!

yes, there is a reg to say to all points. but there is another reg to say it doesnt have to go to the final point (light) if its DI. so if the earth is at the connection above ceiling, then just a 2 core drop down to a DI light, then its compliant. although it may well be that there isnt an earth there anyway, in which case, just do what you can and fit a DI light (or re-wire the lighting)
