Here we go again

I seem to remember a similar post but can't find it. Long story etc Customer has sockets in house wired as radials (2.5T+E poss 30m long). Somebody has spurred off one of the radials out the gable end to an adapt box then run a 6mm armoured 15m to a carport where they've put a 2 way CU with a 6amp mcb on the lts and a 6amp mcb on 1 socket.

I immediately started the frowny tut tut tut thing when the customer showed me the situation. Upon reflection I can't actually see anything contravening the regs here (why do I feel I'm going to get it for saying that)

Yes distances are close to max and somebody could change the 6amp mcb's for whatever but as it stands I can't actually fault it.

There are 2 x 150watt halo floods, 1 x twin par 38 pir security light and 1 twin socket. In this area I'm changing the fittings plus loads of other work in the main house.

Any opinions.

Someone has thought about it by the sound of it. 6A on the socket etc . Is there an RCD ? What is the Zs out there ? The 6A MCB probably helps . 6mm for VD I assume . HHmmmm ???

The fact that someone could change the MCB means nothing TBH . Same as someone putting a nail across a rewirable fuse, you can't control that action .

A 6A MCB will still give you 13 amps plugged in.

How is it any different fitting a little CU with MCB's rather than a fused spur - just another means of providing overload protection?

It's aTT, haven't checked Zs at carport yet but the rest of the house is around 100-110ohms. I've just upgraded earthing (previous thread lots of doubled rods)

100ma TD on main, 30ma RCBO's on every cct (or will be when I'm finished)

Yes, my thoughts we're 6mm for VD house to carport.

Just didn't know wether it needed a comment on my final EIC when I've finished, probably not.

I would comment on certificate about poor design because you know if somebody moves in to property in future they will plug something into circuit and throw trip out but thats about all you can do.

Is there an RCD in the external CU too so possibly not providing discrimination from the rcbo's? Is the earth exported to the CU too?

No RCD in external CU and the earth is exported as a core of the 6mm SWA C/W the armouron gland spades etc.

oops here we go

Doesn't matter with TT because you are not sharing your neighbours fault current.

:D
