You gotta love em....

Todays job was a cu swap.

Having been to price up the work a few weeks ago I knew roughly what was what as I'd done pre testing (ring end to end + IR across circuits) while there.

Agreed that the customer could go to his supplier for the CU as he said he could get a good deal on the price.... :coat

Get there today & get a grunted "Dad will be here soon" message from the teenager that let me in let in.

At the cu under stairs first thing I notice is a new 10mm T/E through the wall to a new cooker (shall ask for the certs when the fella gets here) strips out the 2x old cu's.......just as I'm slinging them in the bin the chap rolls up.. & hands me a nice shiney 10way fully loaded Clipsal (yuck is all I will say) cu still in its Wickes box :C .

Me ....Thats nice

HIM......"yes I have a mate that works there it only cost me

I am just glad I do not do domestics, when I have, I have charged extra for fitting clients own provided products. Lets face it nine times out of ten you are fitting something you are not accustomed to, this involves instruction reading and extra time.

The extra circuit is a definate no no, thats just downright taking advantage.

I NEVER fit clients own CU , I have found out also that it is just too much hassle,

also been through the extra circuit thing too,

see it there when Im doing the new board , I dont connect it and if they dont mention before I leave then usually a phone call within 2 mins(as Im sitting round the corner),

explain that its an extra and NO I cant certify it as A- its not original from the old CU

B - I didnt install it,

I can note on the cert its OK but I have no idea as to its integrity beyond a meter reading.

That raises the point that you can very rarely rely upon a 2nd party to involve themselves with what you are doing. In the past I've had " We've plumbed in a shower and run a 6mm cable to it but don't feel happy connecting it " ( Me being too busy at the time to fit it in) When you get there , the 6mm is 4mm and the cable goes straight to the shower ,no isolator.

Another one was builder supplying materials, "Heres a load of 2.5 T/E we got cheap" Well it would be seeing as its 1.5mm X 3core/E.
