Evans electrical asked about live cutout changes, heres our guidelines for it, thought id share it with you all better suited to a seprate thread :)

General requirements for replacement of cut-outs

This document covers the precautions necessary for the removal of either insulated

or metal clad single or three phase cut-outs and replacement with single or three

phase cut-outs of the insulated type. In view of the variety of types of cut-out in use

in the Company, the following are not intended to cover any specific makes and

types of cut-out, but are intended for general guidance only.

Replacement of Three Phase Cut-Outs

NO three phase cut-outs, either metal clad or all-insulated, shall be

changed with the service live in ANY circumstances. The service cable

MUST be cut outside the property and the cut out changed under dead

conditions.

Pre and post work polarity and phase rotation checks should be completed in

accordance with Module 12.

Replacement of Metal Clad Cut-Outs (Including Single Pole Fuse-Units).

No attempt should be made to replace this type of cut-out with the

service live. The service cable MUST be cut outside the property and the

cut out changed under dead conditions.

Pre and post work polarity checks should be completed in accordance with

Module 12.

Changing of All-Insulated Cut-Outs up to and Including 100 Amps

The changing of all insulated single phase cut-out patterns up to 100 amps

rating can be carried out under live conditions provided the conditions given in

the General section below are satisfied.

Where an insulated cut-out is to be replaced, no attempt shall be made to

use, or re-use, a rubber cover (

dont get me wrong easy enough to do but... those 20mins of working could if something went wrong turn into a life time of pain or worse case death, you only really get one change on this side of the cut out, we all know the sub fuses take some time to go when the local buildier has decided to go threw a cable a human is nothing to the fuse. a lot of the old timers have bad habbits and they stick to them dont matter what is said to them, but where does your habbit leave you if it all goes wrong? time for a drink i think Guiness Drink

anything else just ask

Excellent post, I am afraid the old bad habbits are still very much alive.

Seen many changes with the phase live it makes me cringe sometimes.

I suppose I have been guilty of this in the past but I think times are changing for the better in most cases.

Involves loads of digging, and a live cut.

Its a specialised work procedure and involves two teams, our DNO expert will fill in the gaps when he sees this post.

I saw it done when I was an apprentice, but have never seen it since lol

I think pme cable is easier as its not so messy as the old tns cables were.

But only guessing though.
