Am I the only person who doesn't give a damn about the Chilean Miners?

A few day ago it was a headline on the breakfast news that the had nearly dug the rescue shaft, ie they were still down there.

Not relevant to me or my life. I try to avoid the news if I can as it's all doom and gloom. I blame the media for 90% of the recession. If they didn't keep going on about it people's spending habits would have remained the same and the problem would have been very much worse.

I don't suppose the Chilean president thought about his political reputation being enhanced by the rescue of the miners, as he welcomed each one .
I read on one of the news channels that all his advisers had advised him to distance himself from the miners predicament and the rescue attempt. It seems the rescue was considered to be near impossible and that if it went wrong in any way, he shouldn't be seen to be involved.

I find it hard to believe you have been completely unmoved by this story.

For me, the main interest has been in the engineering and technical achievement behind the rescue. Pineras aids apparently considered the rescue attempt to be virtually impossible and at the start this must have seemed to be the case. However some of the worlds best engineering brains and most expert drillers have been brought to bear on this task. The size of the technical task would be hard to overstate.

Take for example the cable used to lift the capsule. German designed and built, it is specially designed and wound to resist twisting. And at 28mm diameter it must have a breaking strain of several hundred tons (I haven't calculated it).

I disagree that this has no relevance to our lives. This story shows what can be achieved when the right resources are brought to bear and everyone works together for the common good under a strong and optimistic leadership. The impossible becomes possible. Now, if only our leaders could do the same for some of the worlds other problems!

Hmmmm ! Perhaps I was wrong :C

No, I don't think you were wrong. I'm sure that Pinera is an extremely astute politician and was able to discern that the political risk was worth taking.

By the same token though, neither did he just leave the miners in the hands of the mining company. He ensured the best resources available were brought to bear. Against the advice of his aids. He deserves credit for that.

It is very easy to be cynical, as most politicians seem to be such weasels, and normally I'd very much agree with you. But maybe, just maybe, Pinera is one of the few good ones.

That is one aspect that I find impresive...

compared to my lowly drilling skill....

e.g. some older properties with thicker walls, trying to line me drill up to exit the wall in an appropriate location...

especially if gong between rooms with different floor level. a slight angle up or down needed...

I am a chuffed to bits if I come out on target and thats probably only 500mm tops!

so that was some pretty impressive drilling in my book!

You're not kidding! A 28 inch drill bit that hit its target through 700 metres of solid rock! WOW!

They did drill the Channel Tunnel from each side and meet in the middle.

You can get a device that will let you locate where you will drill through a wall.
