I recently fitted led daylight running lights to my Nissan Juke. For the picky, because I wanted to. The controller was the second generation sort you connect directly to the battery. It turns on the drls when you fire up the engine, and shuts them down 15 seconds or so after you turn the engine off. Very simple to fit, but there is a problem. The controller works by sensing the initial voltage drop when the starter motor draws current to turn over the engine, and turns on the drls. When the engine is turned off the battery volts drop to around 12 and the controller senses the drop and shuts off the lights. The Juke has a system for charging the battery which means that it is not always charging. When the battery is fully charged the alternator stops charging until the volts drop below a preset level. Trouble is, the drls think the engine is off and shut down. Ho hum.

I have thought of all sorts of ways to get round this, but I can't think of one that will work. Yes, you can wire into a spare fuse position which is live when the ignition is on so the lights come on and off with the ignition switch, but that simply bypasses the controller. Has anybody fitted one of these 'second generation' controllers and got it to work without being switched off by the 'smart charging' Juke system, and if so, how? Please!! It's driving me and my car mechanic son in law nuts.

Why? You could just take it back to Nissan?

Out of curiosity, why would you want daylight running lights? Do you leave all your lights on at home during the day? What's the point of them?

Welcome to the forum Grumpygrandad, I have changed the text colour of your post so it is easier to read, Deleted duplicate thread and moved it to the Q&A rather then cluttering the introduce yourself area.

Move sucka audi coming through. ..

Why not wire them to the sidelights?

Funny how things go round, Volvo have had DRL's for years, in fact ours are actually turned off, just they're not fancy led ones, strange I don't remember them as being cool or legal requirement. Still just goes to show how advanced the old volvo's are!!

been a requirement on cars for a few years now, then vans then HGV

volvos probably had them being sweedish. im sure its been a requirement there for a long time

Hmm.  14 replies and not one came close to addressing the query let alone solving the problem.  Except maybe for one pdf file which apparently I do not have permission to download..  Thanks guys.  Live long and prosper.

erm...  we play mostly with 230/400v. you would probably have better luck on an auto electrician forum. whilst some of us do some auto wiring, its not something we all know a great deal about. and ive never worked on a nissan juke either

Not enough information given to offer a solution sorry.

To give suggestions for a real solution we would need full detailed schematic drawings of both the controller, and the vehicle, including the function of the charge system.

That way if certain internal components could be swapped out for alternatives that would provide the required function, then this could be advised.

Without the detail drawings, nothing can be given but guesses, sorry.

If you can get the design schematics from the module manufacturer & Nissan for the vehicle then I can advise in more detail, without these all I can do is guess, I'll do that if you want, but that does not seem to be what you are looking for?

Mr snake I don't think he'll be back :(

@OP (if they ever come back) If you wanted DRL's on a modern car without hassle you should have ticked the option when you ordered it.

If I were so inclined as to want DrL's on my Nissan puke I would wire them to the sidelights as car manufacturers are becoming very crafty in getting emissions down and you can't really get round this easily, like what the snake said have you got schematics?

No didn't think so..... now go buy an Audi

:)

NB I would like to be proven wrong :)
