Apache very cross. Laptop has decided to die on me properly. Won't start up, diagnostics list a number of bad sectors. Was a few years old had a cracked screen etc so not going to repair it. I have ordered a cheap and cheerful replacement last night.

My question (and before I ask it I do have a backup but maybe 6 weeks old) how likely will I be able to get a SATA HDD dock and plug old HDD in to get some files back? There's nothing critical on there that I can't live without it would be handy, and could copy browser favourites etc.

Anyone done that with any success?

A few times. getdatabak was the best app I have found to asssist with that. Good luck.

Apache,

It is possible to recover them mate almost certainly!

I found that Ubuntu and the disk connected straight to a motherboard interface was the best option, though, the windows version of the same tool as the Ubuntu one did work in the end and it saved me having to cannibalise another machine!

Search out my thread & the TestDisk application on the internet.

"sort of" thread hijack (sorry vetmeister) - but if you remember the laptop issues I had a while back (won`t start up, just "hangs")?

Welll..... If I hibernate, or sometimes even "sleep" the machine, the DVD-ROM and MM card slots "disappear" - pretty sure thats what causes the problem, `cos it won`t shut down afterwards, either - think its waiting for a response from something it can`t find......... The question has to be, WHY are they affected?

One time, "search hardware changes" under device manager reinstated the DVD-ROM; every other time it pretends to look for changes, but seems to just loop.

Snakehips kindly provided Ubuntu; but it won`t install it (only tried once though), `cos when the white / red dots come up, it froze after 5 seconds or so.......

:head bang

Chaps I am talking to you from my new laptop (Windows 7). Tried the Ubuntu boot disc but couldn't get things to load. Took the HDD out and using a powered dock from Maplins [

I looked at this the other day and was gonna save up!

What, where did the free version come from, it did not appear in your earlier post!

I have a 1TB raid & a 250GB raid, which may be a 500 depending on what the box decides!

No time to sort at the mo!

I can take the 2x500's and stuff them in another box which I am thinking about putting Linux server on and put the 250's back in the raid box

What's the crack on the free version mate?

I have one RAID that is rubbish, mind IIRC I hacked into one of the disks out of the unit and one that all is on the controller card, I can & have taken a disk out and read off it out of the RAID unit directly the "cheap one"!

i find seven can be very tempremental, like vista it has alot of bugs! i dont think Windows will be able to beat XP in all honesty! iv got full backups of both my laptop and the OH PC in case of the event that we had a while ago where the original tower system (OH) had, died on us, still trying to sort it out now n get it back up n running as it sits in bios and wont boot to windows but got alot of data on the HDD so wana get that off it! guna use the software recoveries as a last option, prefer trying to sort the problem out with it 1st!

my laptop has its moment and its runnin 7 some of the features dont always work and its constantly disconnecting and reconnecting my optical drive which is ballache

no offence taken canoe, im proud to admit im blonde, that doesnt come out of a bottle!!! but i am actually fairly intelligent for a blonde! i agree with ya in the respect of windows stuff is shyt, and Apple Os is the way but unfortunatly for now i have to stick with windows! the oh wants a mac again but can not justify it atm as this laptop is only a few months old as it streetlighters PC. but given a bit of time im sure ill get bored of this laptop and want the new apple mac laptop! i dont like working on a desktop anymore i love me laptops! the one iv got atm is the Dell 15R 4gb
