At the aluminium smelter ladders were a no no. In fact you would be sacked if caught on one working. You could go up a pair of steps to check something but not to work. Everything was done from boom lifts, scissorlifts or man boxes on fork trucks. Failing that we had a team of scaffolders on site and they would build and certify a scaffold for you if need be. Problem was an 8 hour outage on a piece of equipment meant that you often lost half a shift making sure it was safe for scaffolders, getting scaffold build and certified, then finally permitting the maintenance guys to actually do the 8 hr job in the remaining 2.5 hours and get the scaffolding removed before end of shift!
