Hi Patch

Why does my 11 month old dog (*****) constantly want to eat faeces when it is out. It appears healthy and lively enough. Does it point to a vitamin need or is a just a dog habbit. Can't remember my last dog being so obsessed with crap eating. I have attached a wee pic of her.

Cheers Steve

One of my GF's dogs always wants to eat horse crap but that can be dangerous if the horse has been wormed recently. Is it dog crap or other crap?

Please don't use symobols to circumvent the forum's rude word filter. I have edited the OP and its title appropriately.

Usually it's just a nasty habit some dogs get into. They do eat other animals faeces, assuming it must taste good to them! I have all on to stop my terrier 'hoovering' up sheep pellets out on walks :D

I assume for feed a commercial dog food? If so it will be balanced for all required vitamins and minerals.

You need to scald the dog when it does this (verbally, not with boiling water) and try to break the pattern of behaviour. Keep the garden and any kennel spotlessly clean.

Very valid point Ian! This is especially the case when the horse has been wormed with a ivermectin based wormer and the droppings are eaten by a collie dog (they are especially sensitive to the drug).

:D

Hi Folks

Thanks for the replies.

She is not fussy about the producer of the droppings, she will happy go for any animals droppings.

Sorry Watchdog for any offence caused, I thought it just stood for Ship High In Transit from the days when dried manure was transported in ships, and if transported in the bilge of the ship it would get wet, cause methane gas to release, and so cause an explosion risk. After a few ships sank and they discovered the reason, the Dispatch Chit for manure then had Ship High In Transit stamped on it.

Thanks again Steve

ROTFWL that made me laugh big time. Thank you!

So probably another question for Patch.

I was going to start another thread but it is for the same dog so I am just using the same thread, and probably related to the original post of her eating faeces.

So yesterday evening noticed her eyes have been quite gungy (they aren't red though) and I thought her breath smelt a little catarrhy.

What do you think doc, does she have a wee cold / infection?

Thanks in advance for your useful replies.

Cheers Steve

She could well be coming down with something. See what happens over the next couple of days. Look at the membranes around her yes to see if they are red. Is she fully vaccinated and has she been in kennels recently?

Hi Patch

Her vacinations are all up to date, she has not been to the kennels. We will keep an eye on her.

Thanks as always for your help.

Cheers Steve

That is a nice picture and with the look on her face I can almost here her thinking, "Is he talking about me again? I'm just off into these bushes, I'm sure I can smell somthing nice to eat?"
