Lets not forget the other thing that is required for ANY PIRs - experience.

As called for in the BRB, IIRC?

You need to not only have the necessary qualifications (which will provide the "competence", but, without experience, you don`t necessarily know what you`re looking for.

Case in point: I`ve just finished that "huge PIR" I posted a thread on about 3 weeks ago. (piccies are being uploaded to my server as we speak! ;) ).

No offence intended, but without a fair amount of experience I wouldn`t have considered that job myself; and I would be fairly sure that a lot of members, with any & every qualification available, may be unable to complete the job, due to the huge range of installation types and wiring systems, from ancient "Ottermill" 39 way TPN boards, with virtually no schedules, and rows of "open" BS88 holders; to single 2 way DBs used for supplying 1 room in the hotel.

I think what I`m trying to say is that a lot of the things you may find you wouldn`t know how to deal with; OR test safely, without the necessary experience. Very few of the circuits; and only 1 of the submains could be isolated for testing; everything else was classed as "un-interruptible"

A domestic installer can be classified as "competent" to carry out a DPIR; but without experience of installation methods and proceedures, still wouldn`t know what to look for, or how to test / inspect it.

BS7671 has it`s own definition of a competent person - experience is a REQUIREMENT!

Strange how so many people are deemed "competent" by their Scheme Provider after having undergone NO training, have NO qualifications or EXPERIENCE.

It would be logical to assume that any person not possessing relevant experience would be unable to VALIDATE any model certificate/report as detailed in BS7671 - merely adding a worthless signature at the bottom may not stand up in court................. :C
