Drilling stone

Hi chaps,

Just after your advice on getting a 4 inch hole for a bathroom extract through a 2 foot thick stone (granite) wall. Not looking forward to this one!

i think a core drill sounds the best bet.

other than that, loads of 6mm holes, but take it slow or you will burn the bits out, you may need a tub of water to keep it cool, or squirty bottle.

Core drill would be best and price it to cover the ware and tare to the core bit.

Definitely a core drill and a very good SDS drill for it. I usually hire the drill and the tool for jobs like this.

A core drill only drills about 6" deep in one go, so you will have to remove it, break out the bit of core, then carry on.

You might need an extension for the core bit to reach that deep.

Personally i would get company in that does this for a living, shouldn't be that expensive and would do it in no time with having the proper water cooled gear.

If it's an old stone house then you might have 2 stone walls (an inner and an outer) and a rubble filled cavity. That's how my walls are made (expect from sandstone). Will be a real PITA when the hole keeps closing up.

Two foot of granite !! Get a drilling firm in , they use diamond tipped cutters.

If this wall is solid stone with lime plaster and rubble you will not be able to drill it. The inside rubble will continue to fall into your attempted hole.

You will unfortunately have to take a hole out of the wall by hand (hammer & chisel etc.) and you will end up with a hole that is 3 times bigger than you anticipated.

TNT normally does it but expect a slightly irregular large hole.

Best of luck, I have cored a granite slab and they are a killer, think there is acompany called Robore-cuts who specialise in this type of work.

Or stick a ceiling fan in and vent it through the soffit, nice and easy.

I used to use a Hilti core drill with a diamond tipped cuter, vacumm, water etc and that would struggle through some types of red brick, never mind granite!

Would have to agree with previous posts, get a quote off a firm that specialises in this type of work.

Thanks for your advice guys. I'll advise the client as he knows this would be a problem. Got 2 more holes to do for new boiler and toilet waste pipe. Property i'm working on only had an outside loo. Old lady used have a tin bath. I didn't think places like this still existed but then this is in Wales!

If the Plumber needs to get pipe through, get a company in to do all three and split the cost. Might work out cheaper to have 3 done at once.
