i did say as much as posible and like it or not its not just an environmental issue but one of resource, as the fosil fules are running out and some of the areas of the world were it is abbundent are not the freindliest of places, china is burning it like no tommorrow.

its true that most of electricity is produced from carbon.

but whats to stop every new build from having compleatly covered solar roofs

increase bio fuels, more eficeint transport. wont look as nice with solar roofs but roofs used to thatch, slate, clay and now concrete people would get used to it. also add cost but that would be absorbed in the mortgage, bit harder for people who already own houes to stump up the cash

I've seen these boilers put into flats in towns.

I have a feeling it is something to do with gas being dangerous, and likely to blow up the whole block, not just the flat where the fault is.

You can get panels that 'blend' in with slate but they are in the order of

I've fitted a couple, and I just can't see the point.

They are for people who want something to "look like" central heating.

But with all the complication of pipework and losses I can't see the point.

If you HAVE to heat your home with electric, then individual electric heaters in each room are a better bet. More controled, individual thermostats and timers if you want and simpler to install.

I fitted some french heaters for someone and they are very pleased. they are made to LOOK like normal radiators but are just an electric heating element inside using some "gell filled" substance. They are all wirelessly controlled from a central programmer.

If you MUST heat your home with direct electricity, then another essential is to change to Economy 10 tarrif, then at least you get a little daytime and evening cheap rate electric as well as most of the night. Make sure you time the heating to come on at the cheap rate times, then use it outside the cheap rate just to top up.

AIUI electric are the way of the future as they do not rely on fossile fuels and the govt will be pushing them in the near future. Maybe they ahve started with that boiler scrappage scheme and the next phase offers bigger discounts to electric boilers.Ian.
but there is one major problem with electric heating: the distribution network would not be able to cope with demand

I doubt the govt will see that as their problem. Guess DNO's will need to upgrade most cutouts too.

Ian.
