Hi all,

I've been doing some research on these electrical franchises, you know the ones, Mr Electric, Eleclocal etc

After watching various videos on the net, I've noticed that when a potential customer calls them in to look at a job, they have with them a folder full of prices. With this they are able to give a fixed price there and then. If there happen to be any unforeseen circumstances, the customer doesn't get charged extra for. They fill out a form listing all the jobs priced and customer signs it there and then.

I'd love to know how they manage that, wouldn't you? I'd also love to get my hands on those fixed prices.

You can do everything for a fixed price as long as you charge a decent rate, and also you win some you lose some. Also, I'm sure there will be a great set of terms and conditions with plenty of clauses.

True, but that's my point, how do you charge enough to cover the jobs you'll lose on, when you don't even really size the job up, but stay competitive?

I used to work for a company that sub contracted to British Gas. I know they also have set prices for work i.e. X amount per radiator, x amount per cylinder etc, no matter whether it be a house, bungalow, cottage, flat you name it. When I went on my own I had proof of this, because I asked them to give me a price for a new heating system. He spent no more than 10mins in my house and then I spied him down the road pricing it on his laptop, we received the quote the very next day. I also had two other local plumbers quote both of those came in at around the

Simple its like the AA thing they use company name to get the work and are probably twice the price of a usual electrician.

If these franchises price in the same manner it just amazes me how they stay afloat.
This sort of relates to your hourly rate thread...

and confirms the fact that people DON'T actually just pick the cheapest option!

The name!

If you were as big as BG, or could appear to be, then you could charge double what everyone else does. This is how they do it, if you come in as the local electrician you'll not get any work quoting at double all the other local blokes because you're just person C, some local bloke. If you have flashy vans, adverts in all the nationals etc... then you can charge what you want as people get you in because you are Company X, international installer of excellence, or are perceived to be.

Talk to Davetheglitz - he used to work for Mr Electric, and believe me they ain't cheap.

BG I can understand, but these franchises I can't. Sorry, but they aren't that well known to the public at large as BG is, in fact as far as I'm aware we don't have any Mr Electric sparks here and only one Eleclocal. So I don't go with the name thing. I only used BG as an example to demonstrate they price in the same manner.

Buy into the franchise.

hahahaha (sorry)

Oh, bet I'm harder than you.

1 of each around here. To be honest I'd hate it. Your still earning someone else money. Its not as if setting up on your own as a spark is the hardest business to set up. Could be done for less than 2.5k, getting work isn't too bad if your keen and honest.

leave it out lads, theres no need to be like that.

anyway my dad would spank both of youy at the same time, he's well ard!
