Back in the days of PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyl) insulating fluid, legally disposing of electrical scrap was a nightmare and it still is. I won’t go in to how it’s disposed of but it’s used as a fuel along with other nasties for some industrial processes where it’s burnt at very high temperatures.

Processing scrap in third world countries doesn’t surprise me, it’s a way of keeping recovery costs down with no regard for workers health.

There used to be a place near me, well, about 10 miles away. It was called "rechem" and they used to burn that stuff. Local farmers claimed that it made their lambs deformed.. Place has closed down now, as you say, cheaper to sent it to poison the foreigners. Makes you wonder though, put the wrong thing in one of the multitude of bins you are supposed to have, and they will not take it away and threaten you with alsorts, then, they send the stuff abroad to be dumped.. Why not burn it all.. They do in sweden..

We do burn PCB’s as a supplement to coal and biomass in kilns and furnaces, it degrades and burns at 2000°C.

Recovering small amounts of rare metals is expensive if you follow the protocols………….
