I have just got a Fluke 6500 PAT tester and on initial plug in gives an error code #77 Stating to unplug the device and there is a earthing connection problem. I am about to complete the City and Guilds PAT course but am just getting set up to perform basic PAT tests of our office and work shop out here in Saudi Arabia. I have taken the unit back to my accomadation and plugged in with the same error code coming. Device will not even start to perform its self test because of the error code #77.

I would just like some more information on the eror code #77 with redards to the Fluke 6500 PAT Tester

Hello David,

Welcome to the forum

Looking at the User guide for the Fluke 6500 Appliance Tester it says:

If there is an error a self explanatory message will

appear. Follow the screen instructions if an error

message is displayed!
And you stated:

gives an error code #77 Stating to unplug the device and there is a earthing connection problem.

That's another way of saying what I was thinking. ;)

Is this tester new?

This may sound daft but is the PAT tester one that has been specifically configured for Saudi and not for another country?

My thoughts what is the earthing system in Saudi ie do you have an earth.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

As it happens I lived in Saudi Arabia for eight years.A lot of plugs are two-pin.
That would explain it then. A bit of RTFM wouldn't go amiss, and also the OP should look into some additional training, 'unless about to complete' means 'not yet started'. ;)

LURCH! Behave.

Ave read the manual but ave also plugged the Fluke 6500 into a few dirrent wall sockets and still error code coming up #77 No earth.

So Its a UK purchased Fluke 6500 with cal cert from RS and was bought to be used out in Saudi with a large office fitted with UK wall socket outlets and a small work shop also with UK wall sockets.

All equipment purchased is with UK plugs so was just getting ready to PAT test the place.

I have not got very far at the moment with a Fluke 6500 that will not get past its self test to idle screen as yet!

What would you experts do next in this situation.

A few guys have been in and looked at the back of a few floor sockets and said yes earth is there! This statement may just mean there is a physical wire connected to nothing further along!

How would you properly test for the quality of the earthing circuit within an office enviroment which has been fitted out with UK floor sockets.

Is it the calibrated Fluke 6500 at fault or the actual earth in the mains supply. I am thinking being Saudi it could be the earth missing. I am not an electrician and by the looks of the office electrics nor we they!

I want to be able to show the building people that the earthing has a fault, what is th best method of showing this.

Going to an "installation" tester, or MFT, and doing a Zs test on the sockets would show the quality of the earthing.....

The PAT tester won`t do this, though.

Would it be wrong to take an earth from some metal pipework, just to see if the machine worked?

If what I am suggesting is leathal someone will correct me!

It depends what the metal pipework is connected to. TBH, not knowing fully the Saudi wiring systems I wouldn;t like to advise what to do exactly, but if it is a 230V single phase supply which is possibly lacking an earth then supplying an earth by means of connecting to something metallic that is grounded (as in actually buried in the ground to a good depth) would probably be an idea, assuming the wiring system and distribution network are set up to actually have an earth.

What you are a vet who thinks he's a sparks? Only joking, Patch, we know you are a search engine really.

Anyway, welcome to the forum Ray123. Maybe worth posting to the introduction section with a bit about yourself.

DAvid, not sure if you are still around as this post is 4 years old, but .... did you ever resolve the problem? We have exactly the same issue and need to get our testers working.

He may have followed paches advice......and that is why he is no longer here!
