Extending a ring main and light circuit.

Hi all,

I am currently putting up a partition wall in my kids room to turn it into two rooms. Once the wall is up I need a new light in one of the rooms and also two new sockets. I have a friend who is a trained electrician who will come and do the work for me but he cannot sign the work off. As I have given building notice for the partition wall would I need to get the electrical work signed off to past the building inspectors checks or is that only required in special zones.

adding new sockets & lights to existing circuits in a bedroom does not require part p notification. the only 'sign off' that needs to be done is an MWC which anyone can do

And why would you need building control sign off to add a non load bearing partition wall?  you would only need that if you were doing something structural like a new opening in a wall for a new window.

Building Control may specify fitting smoke detectors throughout the house after a material change of use, and may require a certificate for this too before signing off. They are a bit of a law amongst themselves, bless em.

I recently fitted smoke alarms in a house which already had a mist fire suppressant system installed, BC decided they wanted battery smoke detectors in  the 2 bedrooms, in one of the circulation spaces, battery heat in kitchen and a mains smoke in the loft (all radio interlinked), so it did not fully comply with bs 5389 pt 6, this was noted on the fire detection cert. They may also want intumescent strips added to certain doors.

See what they want, and oblige them. They have your, and your family's, best interest at heart.

Thanks for the replies. I notified them because if you look on the planning portal it says you need to give building notice for a new internal wall, load bearing or non-load bearing. We also may look to sell the house in the near future and didn't want any problems with that.
