yeah yeah ... WRONG mr Steptoe :p :p

your apology is in the post

Guiness Drink
Im wrong quite often, but if someone posts the wrong picture then am I supposed to mind read and tell what it is.?

I suppose I could post a picture of a ford fiesta and say it holds 57people,

after all, it has an engine, same as a bus.

hell thats the first apology Ive seen from you... if thats what you can call it;)

a few more posts and I might even be welcomed into the inner circle Pray

Your definately in the category of 'Dangerous 5 day wonder with no knowledge' is anyone thinks this is acceptblethe earth core is there for a reason. to be used as an earth. not something else.

and 4 core flex is easily available
is this guy allways this pleasent:(

MMmm no Im sure Andy is a great guy... sometimes as I have found myself a certain amount of banter is thrown at you by the 'regulars' :coat

My advice is ... JOIN IN ! ;)

and dont let Mr Steptoe try and tell you other wisewise because he's wrong more than right !

thanks sarni what is this inner circle?

is the club house in steptoes privy? :p :^O
Its the nucleus of this forum, the people who keep it going, the ones who help us all out when we are stuck. If one of them doesn't know the answer then another of of the 'inner circle' will know.

We should all be thankful that they are here.

how do i go about joining this 'inner circle' thing?!

i really cant see what steptoe did wrong.

Sarni said if 'im wrong dont shout at me', but he was the first person to start shouting when someone disagreed with him, in my opinion the diagram was spot on and it obvious it is a ceiling rose with the lamp wires omitted.

OOo another one jumping in half way through a thread ]:)

If you read from the begining you will see Apache is trying to help someone who is not sure what there doing ... so yes its 'it is obvious its a ceiling rose', however that may not be the case the to the person doing the work...

and just for the record No one is shouting ;)

Is anyone going to have a go at answering OP?I am prepared for correction or to be told that I am wrong but here's what I'd do...........

you need to do a bit of detective work - follow some cables etc and try to find out what those two cables are going out of the light. Assuming that you have identified the wire to the switch and discounted it - it is likely that these wires are the feed into and out of the light. Can you see where they go? You could post a pic of the light fitting wiring?

I would use a voltage detector to make sure they both remain live when the switch is operated. Also is there an existing fan? Could one of these go to the fan? If there's no fan AND voltage remains despite what you do with the light switch, It is likely these two are the feed in and out of the light.

You need to cut one of the red and black wires somewhere there's some slack and install a junction box (4 way). Red is live, black is neutral, copper unsheathed is earth. You need some 3 core and earth wire coloured black, brown, grey and unsheathed copper earth and a bit of 2 core and earth with brown (live), blue (neutral) and unsheathed copper earth. Run a length of 2 core and earth from the JB to the pull cord and a length of 3 core and earth from the JB to the 3 pole isolator, and from the isolator to the fan

You need to connect to the two red lives of the existing cable to the brown of the 3 core and the brown of the 2 core. Then connect the two black neutrals of the existing supply to the grey of the 3 core and earth (usual to apply some blue sleeve or even blue insulating tape to identify the cable as neutral. Connect the Black cable from the 3 core and the blue cable from the 2 core into another terminal and sleve both brown (this is the switched live). In the final terminal sleeve all the exposed copper earths seperately in green and yellow sleeve and screw down tightly.

At the pull cord connect connect the brown to the common and the blue (sleeved brown) to L1.

I have now found a diagram I have modified as getting sick of typing

shower_fan_wiring-HARMONISED.jpg

Note the sleeving of the various conductors - makes it easier for yourself and any spark who may come along later.

Basically:

red is old and brown is new live

Black is old and blue is new neutral

If wiring already protected by RCD that should be fine, but push the test button a few times to make sure it's working!

Where is the fan going to be positioned? Is it a 12V or a 230/240V one? There may be a transformer required too.

Don't prat about with 5A junction boxes get a decent sized 20A+ and they are far easier to work in.

I stand back to be corrected...
Why not stand close?

its more friendly! ;) :x :^O

The one thing missing (excluding steptoes bulb! ; \ :p ) from your picture & info is that MOST fan manufactures suggest they should be protected by a 3A fuse.

so you also need to stick an FCU (non switched is fine as you have a 3pole isolator in circuit) somewhere appropriate.

Unless you are NOT going to follow manufactures instructions? ; \

:)

so where does this leave me "employ another registered spark have the work signed off by the council and maybe completed incorrectly" or try and learn how to complete the task correctly myselfdo i need part p to use my shaver in the bathroom or do i need to be supervised?
If this is a genuine situation, rather than a hypothetical question, the correct answer would be:-

1/ A registered spark undertook the work? get him/her back to put it right.

2/ If he/she refuses... contact his/her registration body.. put in a complaint as per their complaints procedure.

3/ If it is dodgy and non-compliant they will either get him/her to put it right or another electrician to put it right at NO cost to yourself.

4/ If you don't get results from the above... contact your local Trading Standards.

problem solved! ;)

Re: wiring extension

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

equipotential bonding is always req'd and is nothing to do with the bathroom.... supp bonding isnt needed in bathroom if certain conditions are met. see 7671 for more info.

Why are you upgrading exisint CU and installing second?

why have you extended earthing from one bathroom to other?

From your questions, i get the feeling your not competent to do the work?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

got a bit hot under the collar at andy's comment and kinda let rip as regard to the original wiring installation

ie using an earth as a switched live

hiding 6 inch tail of earth bonding in grip fill rather than take it to the light switch if i read gh's reply correctly.

you all appear to very hospitable gentlmen

Blushing apologies to all
