Just pointing out that the protection afforded by the FSCS   ( Financial Services Compensation Scheme)  on your savings in the bank  is at present  £85000   per account holder so if you have joint accounts with your wife , say, your savings are protected up to £170000   .

As of  Jan 1st 2016   this limit will drop to £75000  per account holder.

This protection covers things like the collapse of Northern Rock  etc.

i got a letter the other day from halifax, reminding me that i havent used my account for 15 years and it now has 12p in it, which if i dont claim within a few month will be put into some other fund...
