Went to finish second fix in a two properties today in readiness for testing and certification tomorrow. In 1 property I was asked to look at a florrie that has been fitted in the kitchen area that does not work. I checked the voltage at the connecting block between SWL-N SWL-E all 239v There is nothing happening at all. What else can I check? The starter is in and the tube is fitted correctly. The fitting is new but even they can be faulty. :yawn

I gave a few wires a tug to check for loose connections, but will check more in depth tomorrow. failling that as the fitting is new I will get a replacement .

Firstly check with another starter and tube and then look for loose cables or not even in the terminals. modern fittings are push in and not always reliable.
I can try the tube and starter from the other property next door.

I have'nt checked the fuse. I have something to go on at least tomorrow.

I've been getting a high failure rate on tubes recently 1 in 25 straight out the box not working.

switch off...remove starter [why do some peeps call them starter motors???????]...switch on. test voltage across starter contacts. should be supply voltage as starter is connected directly across opposite ends of tube. This will test the end cap connections and the connection throught he cathodes. then test N to starter connection and L to starter connection. Process of elimination should sort it out...reading that back it does not really make sense but you get the drift? [just sampled the home made Chilean Merlot...better/stronger than anticipated]... :coat

I'm having a pint of Stella at the moment and your post makes a lot of sense!! Cheers

I fitted a new one a month ago same fault as you discribed I took out the starter and popped in another from a second light Bingo! lit up like a new one replaced starter with one out of the van.

Job done !!

Back there in the morning to test . should have been today but got diverted to other things. I have a few things that I can check aswell but I will make sure I have some spare starters/tubes on the van before I go. You never know, could be something very simple..

An update...I fixed it!!! Loose wire on the end cap. Simply pushed it in, power back on and on it came..Thanks to all the suggestions from the members on the best forum..Cheers !!!

Had some recessed modular fittings the other day to fit, the one had a broken starter switch base which only took a couple of minutes to replace back at the wholesalers, but isnt it a right pain when these things dont work or are damaged from when new!

In an ideal world you shouldn't have a new component that is defective but it's one of those annoying things that happens from time to time. It's lost time too going back to the wholesalers to change it.
