Their Website has the following notice; Focus DIY for home and garden

Following notification of an event of default under the senior credit facility, and a realisation that there were no alternatives that could be explored any further, Focus Directors have come to the conclusion that to protect the interests of creditors they have no choice but to seek protection through filing a notice of intention to appoint administrators.

The Directors have sought consent from the business's lenders to appoint E&Y as the administrators. All stakeholders including staff are being informed.

I heard on the radio that stores will be closing within 5 working days. I can't personally see much hope for selling it on as a going concern. But I had thought that they had been taken over years ago as part of Homebase or Wickes, Obviously not.

Well that was my impression Matty, that they had gone into financial problems a few years ago and Homebase/Wickes or someone had bought them. But thinking again Wickes were having problems a few years ago and they are now part of Travis Perkins. So I am probably getting mixed up somewhere. Did Focus have many stores nationwide? or are they one of these companies mainly in one area, north or south?

Doc H.

They are nationwide, mate. They are in Wales - but for years, they never seemed to be busy.

I use the local one occasionally but only when I'm stuck as they are very dear compared to the other DIY stores (probably why they are fubared I guess)

TBH the stock they had was expensive and poor quality. I feel bad for the people who lost their jobs, but will not miss the company.

i also think they as a company are very expensive and tbh the stuff they sell isnt that good quality, i tell you another company i think is expensive and thats maplins!

I think you do have to shop around and check prices in Maplins. As you say some items can be expensive that you expect to be cheap. But then some other items can be quite good value and quality. Maplins do have a lot of, walk around self selection stores, and the online shop overheads to cover and their stock is not everyday stuff that the average person buys each week. So that must be reflected in their prices.

quite a niche maplins no tandys to compete and the likes of RS are trade only anyway

Indeed, they tend to have a largish display of decks, amplifiers, mixers lighting rigs etc, for the amateur D.J. So I assume this is an important part of their market, other than specialist music/band suppliers I can't think of many other shops where the hobby DJ would go to buy his, (her) gear?

Doc H.

RS and Tandys is the same shop, Tandys was the day to day retail outlet for Radio Shack, I think the usual slimming down simply took place and something had to give, and the RS name combined both outlets.

from what i can remember in the uk the shops were Tandy/s and over in the states they were Radio Shack

a bit like walmart and asda setup same firm ish
