Well it is impressive but I’d have been more impressed if you’d found the Lancaster bomber from which it came.

Never mind Kerch, maybe you’ll get a metal detector for Xmas.

I am sure I told you of my most interesting find, in a loft, under the loft insulation by the hatch.  A WWII rifle.

The best bit is it was an ex police house, I was getting it ready for rental by the new owner who had just bought it (and the police station next door)

I was doing some maintenance for an amusement arcade company and went to one of their sites to carry out some work, one of the jobs was to repair a faulty light in the cash box, it was one of those 600x600 ceiling lights. I lifted a tile to take it out and found a cloth bag on to of the fitting, inside was a load of assorted notes, 5's 10's 20's, there was about a grand in total. It turned out one of the cashiers was massively on the fiddle, pinching about a grand a month, not bad for a bonus is it.

The whole firm was silly, I got called out one night to a break-in at another site and arrived to find the plate glass window shattered, a large kerbstone sat in the middle of the arcade, and every machine had been broken open and the cash stolen, now these machines can hold quite a lot of money, so potentially there was several thousand pounds stolen.

I met the manager on site and was chatting to him while waiting for the alarm engineer to reset the system, something didn't look right about this, then it clicked, the object that had broken the window was inside, but all the glass was on the outside!

The alarm engineer arrived and I asked if he could get any info off the alarm, he could, a printout, excellent. The alarm was set at 22.10, just after the premises closed, at 23.00 it was unset, at 23.30 it was again set, at 23.40 there was an activation caused by the front window being broken.

Naturally we involved the police and when they attended I pointed out the odd situation with the broken glass, and showed them the printout, it was an inside job! It turned out it was the manager who'd done it, he'd taken the kerbstone inside from a roadworks and lobbed it through the window, previous to this he'd gone back after work, turned the alarm off and ransacked the machines, thrown the kerbstone through the window, then rearmed the alarm. then as he left he realised the kerbstone should have been inside the building, so he'd thrown it back in, setting off the alarm, it hadn't occured to him that most of the glass should have been inside as well!

He was arrested and charged, and he was sacked from the firm, at his dismissal he actually had the cheek to ask if he would still get his Christmas hamper! ( it was early December and all the staff were given a hamper as a gift at Christmas) Needless to say he didn't get it.

There were numerous frauds/thefts going on within the company and in the end I had to stop doing work for them, I ended up getting death threats of someone who'd been sacked for theft, they were caught as a result of something I uncovered while working there.

I came across similar a few times in Police houses .  First one  was a locked steel box  in the loft right in our way for pulling cables up .  I grabbed it to lift but it was screwed down .  It turned out to be his anti riot  kit  , helmet , visa, shield , weapon , baton  etc.

Some years ago I was fitting a high end security system for a local heavy, there were sensors on all the windows, contacts on all the doors, pir's in every room and panic buttons everywhere. I was installing the panel in a cupboard in the bedroom and as it was full of stuff asked him to empty it before I arrived, which he did, all except for a shoebox on the top shelf. My apprentice lifted it down and opened it, it was full of ****o pictures of his wife, Polaroids, loads of them.

We did the job and put it back without saying anything, when we'd finished and were packing up he arrived back home and asked if we'd found anything in our way, we said we hadn't, except the shoebox, he then asked if we'd looked inside, we said we hadn't, trying to keep a straight face. "that's a pity, it had some family photo's in it, you'd have enjoyed them" he replied.

I warned the apprentice, never to speak of what he'd seen in that shoebox, as the guy was a proper heavy, a few years later he got locked up for putting a bloke in hospital, apparently he had seen the blokes wife and not realising who she was had made some comment about what he'd like to do to her given the chance! some things found on jobs are best forgotten.lol
