Client wants a supply to detached garage (lighting and a few sockets for freezer etc nothing heavy) 6 metres from house. Also supply to summer house 6 meters from garage (12m from house) again basic lighting and couple of sockets. TNS and nothing extraneous in either structure.

So SWA from non-rcd way in house CU.

Do I need a small CU (RCD protected) in each building (supplying second CU from live side of main switch from first CU) or should I just run SWA to summer house from a RCD protected MCB in the garage?

personally.....

non rcd side from main cu to board in garage,,,,,,3 rcbos in garage swa to summer house 3 way board in there

For such a small amount of circuits I would just fit an rcd main switch cu in garage then feed the summer house from there on protected side

Be a bit cheaper than rcbos???

Your call really much of a muchness

I would agree as Welchyboy above. 4way cu in garage (rcd main switch) feed summer house off a mcb in garage cu. fit another small cu in summer house. It's cheaper and safe. The customer is most interested in cost and cos its safe your arse is covered.

You could fit an adaptable box in garage fed from house cu. from the adaptable box feed the garage cu and also run an armoured from the adaptable box to the summer house cu but then you are paying for an adaptable box, extra terminations and you still need two boards one in garage and one in summer house. So it's just more cost and hassle.
