Hi , I`m new to the forum . I have just come across a suggestion regarding how to feed the supply from a portable generator into your domestic supply . It stated that you could run a lead from the generator into the house and plug this into any normal 13A socket . Firstly , this would give you a trailing lead from the generator with live exposed pins on the plug , so my question is : Is this possible and furthermore , is it legal ? And no , I certainly don`t intend to attempt it .

Hi,

To be honest it is a tango'd lunatic thing to do. What happens the day there is a power cut because the DNO are working on a cable they KNOW is dead, and then you liven it up from the "other end" and kill someone...

Do not even think about it..

john..

the proper way to do this is via a change-over switch fitted to the incoming meter tails, so that you can isolate the grid supply before starting up your generator, thereby avoiding a dual supply into the house and not trying to power the entire street from your little genrator

those leads are called widow makers for a reason. anyone stupid enough to use one should be forced to touch the open ends and kill themselves before some innocent person is killed through it

Most site generators are totally unsuitable for backup to a domestic supply due to their internal configuration.

I’ll echo what others have said about the safety aspect not just to yourself but others that may be working on the supply system.

Think long and hard before you do anything, it will be your head on the block when this goes wrong and it will go wrong as you show a singular lack of knowledge for a time served electrician.

Thanks for your replies . As I mentioned in my post, I have no intention of trying it . I don`t have a generator but it was just something i found profoundly wrong and in view of the fact that you would make the network live then there would be legal implications as well .

If, and only if you know just what you are

doing,

The only viable way I can think of doing this is via ONE dedicated socket within your house fed from the generator, with the proper earthing and via a proper inlet to feed said dedicated socket.

Most site gennys have specific earthing requirements that are alien to household earthing systems , great care is required.
