I been calling up electrical contractors and one man bands today offering to work for free. Just to get some experience. Then I came across an opening which has been posted today on careers Wales for an electricians mate position. I thought excellent I will call the company directly and explain my situation. I did and the director told me that I'm ideal for the position but I would still have to go through the careers Wales as they are paying for the wages, the only issue is the age group is between 16 to 24 and I'm 31. I called them up and apparently theirs nothing they can do because the welsh assembly government has looked at the unemployment statistics between these age groups and seen its the highest in the unemployment sector. So they have got to be seen to be giving these young people a better chance of getting into employment which is fine by me but

1. I'm 31 I have put myself through collage gaining these electrical qualifications because I'm serious about working as an electrician. I have an Cscs card NVQ level 2 city&guilds 2351&2330 level 2 own tools a clean drivers license and own car.

2. Some 16 to 24 year old no experienced no qualifications no Cscs card no drivers license no car no get up and go and not really sure if they can get out of bed and be bothered to work.

Yet these have more opportunities then me??????

What a complete joke I'm so angry I feel completely let down.

Sadly that's life with government schemes! What about all the 19-24 year olds in england that don't have the same scheme, or the solar Pv I put 4k into and got next to nothing out.

It's just life mate.

We were told by the lecturer when doing our 2330 that the college wasn't really interested in mature evening students paying say

Dont get yourself down, if you really want to do it, you will. Why not do your level 3, you may be more appealing to electrical contactors or become self employed, carry out small jobs until your confident to take on bigger jobs.

I dont want to rain on your parade,

but that is like all the other ****ing ********s and numpties out there,, only you have actually tried your best to prove you are not one,

the sole reason you cant get a job is cos of all the ****ing ********* out there trying to become sparks that cant so they have set up on their own, as no right thinking individual will pay them the amount of money their dis-illussioned little brains think they are entitled to even though they know jack **** as they are only glorified site labourers from a pen pushers office that may have a few exams but as the saying goes, all the kit, full of ****.!

May I suggest you move away from the M area if it's that bad!!

It's really hard going out there at the moment and I appreciate that. I just think the welsh government could have left it open to all age groups for funding and left it down to individual companies discretion to ***** each persons competences at least that way the companies could claim thousands of pounds for the right type of people rather than just having people through there doors that ain't really interested and not going to be a valuable asset to the future of this industry. And not people who unlike my self who have put them selves through collage and sacrificed getting a full time job to better there future.

If i get anything major out that way ill let you know Gavin but lately ive had nothing decent out that way, got a roller shutter door to sort in carpet right caerphilly but when they authorise materials is another matter....

I will be, just not soon enough,

actually Im doing OK, but, I should be doing good,

its the whole country that is in a mess, not just this area.

I would estimate >80% of my new private work is following on from 5ww, and fixing their mess,

customers are then realising they dont always get what they pay for,

example, went to a CU change a few weeks ago that customer paid

Gavin

Well done with all your exams just recently qualified myself and was up until 1 year ago very much in the same boat as yourself as i'm 30. I put myself through my level 2 2330 4 years ago but wasn't able to find work as it was the start of the recession and people were being laid of left and right. While i agree that the age range should be opened up to at least 35 i do also agree with where the government is coming from. Not only that government funded schemes are not always the best option i have seen a few lads taken on at 16 put through training at college only to be thrown to the kerb once qualified as the company will just replace them for another 16 year old that they can benefit from with government grants and cheap labour. my brother was almost one of them. A housing firm around my area took 8 apprentices on from his year gas engineers, sparky's etc but once qualified only had contracts waiting for 3 of them even though when they first started they were told (by word of mouth and not on paper) that they would all be given full time contracts once qualified and told they would all be earning 25K+. I found that when i was looking for work contact some obscure companies that you wouldn't normally think about showed more promise. I now work as a datacentre engineer with my primary role as an onsite electrician for a large gambling company. I still have lots of work on and it allows me to work on equipment that a lot of electricians will never work on i.e rotary UPS, backup generators etc. As silly as it sounds try contacting companies that you wouldn't normally think about and see if they have in house maintenance staff and see if they will take you on, once you have your foot in the door it could lead to anything. Don't give up hope.

Gavin, I will keep an ear to the ground for you, but I'm pretty much in the same boat work wise. It's a small point, but given that you are contacting so many people, and competition is so fierce, I will just point out that small spelling errors may harm your appeal, for example, spelling college as 'collage? I hope this is something you do online as a careless typo. You might think I am being pedantic, but educated people who are looking at hundreds of applications can afford to be picky, and these small errors can get your application chucked in the bin.

You seem like a sincere and determined person, and I really hope that you get the chance you deserve soon.

Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up voltz lol can't believe I did that makes me sound like a numpty lol:D

Well it's good news nothing in concrete as such yet but due to my persistence of calling companies and nocking on doors I got an interview type of thing with my local authority tomorrow. I initially phoned to discuss an apprenticeship role they have on offer but quickly found again that they are targeting people between the age groups of 16-24. Never the less I continued to explain my circumstances and informed them that the job centre would allow me to get evolved in whats called a work trial placement scheme where I work for free for up to a maximum of 8 weeks, completely free of charge in order to gain experience and for them to evaluate and ***** my my level of knowledge and skills. I further explained the benefit to them is that it's no obligation and if everything works out perhaps they could then give me an apprenticeship role. They told me to forward an upto date cv and in turn pass it on to the relevant person and have a chat for me on my behalf. This morning I get a phone call asking me to attend tomorrow for a chat and I'm also told they have work on for me so fingers crossed :D

Excellent example of how persistance pays off. Proves that if you are prepared to put the effort in you will get a return, it may not be the return you believe that you deserve but as others said its not what it appears to be a the time but what it can develop into that counts.

All the best..

Just an update. I went for a chat with the manager and he informed me that he is willing to let me work for free of charge for 2 months as a work trail. The job involved is installing kitchen rewires in local housing, so chasing out walls and doing first fix while the electrician comes behind me doing second fix. Should be easy as I have done house rewires in a day. After the 2 month mark if they are happy he will take me on full time through hays construction agency for a period of 3 months then full time for the council. He also said I can have a day off to continue my qualifications too, so I'm happy with that. :)

Well done and i hope it all works out for you.

As the saying goes if you don't ask you don't get
