In the words of Andrew Sachs "I know nothing" is a DIY mantra not often used.

Welcome to the forum...

re:- "bits you understand"..
Some basic essentials you MUST remember are;

1. Electricity is a substance that in normal circumstances you cannot see, smell or hear.
2. Electricity can generate sufficient heat to start a fire capable of destroying a property.
3. Electricity can kill a healthy adult in less than half a second.
4. Electricity can be used, and has been used, to administer the death penalty in some countries.
5. Just because something works, does NOT mean it is safe.
6. DIY electrical work is legally permitted in the UK.
7. Because something is legally permitted, does not mean it is safe for everyone to undertake.
8. ALL electrical work should be designed to fail safe.. Whereas any idiot can make something work.

Not sure if I have missed any key points..
But these are some of the essential ground rules that most of our regular members will be considering when answering posts..

We are generally happy to pass on guidance to anyone who is obviously not completely out of their depth.

Reminds me a of a saying my first employer (Brigadier) used to say.

There are bold soldiers and there are old soldiers, there are no old bold soldiers.
