Looking for some advice please, have zero knowledge!! Lived in a new build for nearly 4 years and the kitchen is fitted with a Dicon 680MRL heat alarm, equipped with a 9v lithium battery. It's hard wired to the mains and supposedly uses the battery for any mains failure situation. Today the unit has started beeping every 45 seconds non stop. Turned mains off and took unit off the mounting base to see if battery was replaceable but can't even find access to battery, seems tamper proof ? Questions please to anyone who has any experience are; does the entire unit need replacing? Should this happen within 4 years as the product cites 5-10 years warranty? Why would the battery need replacing if it's always ran from mains power from the start of residence? The beeping is fairly loud...and incredibly annoying....any help or advice greatly appreciated!!

The MRL has a rechargeble battery and is supposed to last for a very long time. There are a number of things you can try, clean the detector with a vacuum cleaner, check the wiring, make sure all connections are sound.

Has the power been off in your house for a while? If so the sounder will bleep every 45 seconds until the battery is recharged.

If all that fails and it is still under warranty, then send it with proof of purchase to the supplier. Your electrician should be able to help you here.

Its beeping because its battery is on the way out.

Although you "don't use its battery" its still being constantly charged by the mains, this in effect "cooks the battery" the battery is now past its useful life, even though it is supposed to last 10 years, this one hasn't.

If you have the receipt for it (It may have been a year or so old when it was installed) you can send it back under warranty if its actual age is less than 5 years. Personally I would not bother. Its battery is NOT replaceable.

Now the bad news. You can't "mix and match" interlinked smoke detectors, so I am saying that if you change this one, you will have to change all of them to the same brand to ensure compatibility.

As has been said, Dicon are not on most peoples favourite list.
