Patch, I know you don't the small stuff, but do Vet's up your neck of the woods charge for a scan of a cat (is that a CAT scan ; \)

Seems that Vet's in Surrey have not heard of the financial melt down, charged my wife's friend over

I would like to start my very carefully worded reply by expressing regret if people are upset over their vets bills. We as a profession are in a very difficult situation - we are a series of small businesses scattered throughout the country providing a high level of service at a relatively low cost, with no outside subsidy. Can anyone name another business that offers a 24 hour 365 day a year emergency service with no subsidy?

Now many of you are small business owners yourself and you realise that the costs to keep the wolf from the door can be significant! We have a premises to buy/rent, equip with modern equipment and facilities, staff to employ, drugs to hold in stock etc.

We provide a 24 hour service ourselves which means that 1/4 of my life I am on call, my gf is on the same rota so my sleep can be disturbed 1/2 of my entire working life! :( I work bloody hard and very long hours. I am employed assistant and I earn well below higher rate tax threshold (I'd rather not say the exact amount). I get a whole

The Don has no such problems with his horses, they (their heads) are dispatched as required to the relevant recipient.

The Don's vets usually wave all charges.

Don,

Euthanasia of any species is not included in the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and can, therefore, be done by anyone so long as it is carried out humanely.

If your boys have 'suitable instruments' I can provide further instruction...........

so thats why you have a chainsaw?

Did they not tell her that it was going to be 2k before they did the tests.Batty
It's totally wrong if they didn't. Our guide to professional conduct states we must

g. give realistic fee estimates based on treatment options
The problem often crops up when the pet was sick and they consent at 'any cost' and then get upset when they have a bill and either a dead animal or no diagnosis.

The saying that fills every vet with dread is 'I don't care what it costs'. Usually because they are not intending to pay.................

But the Godfathers standing in society does have considerable influence.

Thanks for the response Patch, must have made your RSI play up :)

As you say if you can't afford vets fees don't have pets as it's cruel to let them suffer, hence my ban on pets

From my experience it does appear that vet bills in Surrey seem to have a correlation between insurance and unnecessary investigation (yes I'm cynical), years ago my cats were successfully treated without the need hardware but through the Vets skill and experience

BTW I was not having a dig, but as the forum Vet I thought you could shed light on the situation, which you did - thanks, PS I think the rate of pay might be attractive down south ;)

Regards

Rant over!!!

Insurance has it's part to play in the costs. Vets have been able to do more because pets are insured. It has made us better. We have more skills and equipment and the standard of practice has expanded because of this.

It has made it more expensive for the uninsured or you chose the basic old fashioned methods of treatment!

Pet insurance has it's merits and is probably a good idea.

There is an annual survey of vets done and they do earn a bit more 'down south' but the cost of living is much higher. I could earn better money if I was a full time pet vet rather than chasing cows around most of my day. I'd hate it.

I'd still earn half as much again as a doctor or dentist with my level of experience :(
