A barn has been renovated into a small house. I am due to start wiring this soon. The house (barn) owner is keen on having switches and sockets outside the 450mm-1200mm range. Would this be acceptable as it is not a new build?

I am aware this is ok with re-wires but am unsure in this situation.

Cheers. J

I think you should check with LABC as I suspect, as its a change of use, it may require it (assuming it was just converted from a barn).

Agreed, a quick call to LABC will give you a definate answer

As this is not a rewire but is in effect a new dwelling as nobody apart from cows or sheep have stayed there before it will fall under building regulations in relation to the heights of accessories as set out in Approved document M.

Why oh why do these people insist they have to have things at the old heights is it a naughty boy or girl thing. Personally new heights are better easy to get to and a lot easier for sparks to wire and no confusion as to when property was wired.

You are clearly not 6'5" then! I hate 2nd fixing because light switches are a tedious job that gives me back ache from all the half bending I have to do. Also I can;t read things on buttons and stuff that are down at 1200mm. Just another stupid requirement that I tend to ignore as it is a rule that was brought in for people who aren't likely to be in most of the jobs I do so completely pointless. Another overly Pc rule because everyone is too afraid to upset a minority rather than listen to the majority.

While I agree with you here, it does concern me slightly that you 'ignore' part of the building regs. After all they are law. I guess that is just badly worded?

Well not completely ignore, but selectively yes. You can legitimately ignore it at times anyway, why put things in places a customer doesn't want them, had a customer ring up and check with the BCO on a job just before christmas and he didn;t even understand the question, he just said put them wherever you want.

So you must really hate it when they want there sockets a skirting height being a lanky bu..er .

I have a retractable stool thats 18 inches tall, perfect height for wiring sockets and spurs etc :) AndyGuinness
I missed the s in stool originally and thought that was just wishful thinking ;) .
