hello all I'm smudge from Newcastle and I'm currently serving in the army. Ive decided 3 tours of afghan is enough for me I'm only 26 and i think this is the best time to change career and fulfill my ambition to be a electrician.

i know its gonna take a few years to get fully qualified but to start off i want to be a domestic installer. just start off small to get my experience and confidence up before tackling the C&G 2330. Ive seen a few company's that offer courses to be a domestic installer but i was wondering is 4 weeks knowledge all you need and am i gonna get a job afterwords. Ive been looking at ableskills because they support the army funding and i should get 75% of my course paid for by the army. I'm just wondering if anybody else has went down this route or used ableskills and can tell me more about them

the course I'm looking at is the complete part p with C&G 2392 consisting of:

C&G 2382 level 3

C&G 2377 level 3

C&G 2392 level 2

part p level 2

and once Ive completed that I'm looking at doing the C&G 2391

just want to know peoples feed back on the route Ive picked to become a domestic installer thanks for looking smudge

you will get nowhere in 4 weeks. yes, you may end up with the knowledge to wire a plug, but overall, wont be much use in the real world. partly why an apprenticeship is 4 years

you should avoid any places like ableskills/training companies/distance learning - go to a college instead

really, you want to be doing 2330 - those you have listed is just knowledge of regs / I&T. just about no useful skills and theory youll get with 2330 etc

hi smudge,

I'm a 4 week wonder DI, my advice is, if you can get it paid for the go for it, then try to get a job working with some one whilst going to evening classes to up your quals.

oh and a 4week course is not 4 weeks.....there is a lot of home study to do! i would say you could do it in a few months if you knuckle down, it took me 12 months but had to work and got married etc...

HTH

thanks for the advice Paul thats what I'm going to do. its hard in the army trying to get a whole year in the UK to study so I'm gonna try get a job as a domestic installer and start My C&G 2330 level 2 and so on. I'm still waiting to hear back from ableskills if they provide job placement when Ive done that course and soon as i can concentrate on my C&G 2330

there is no subtitute for on site experiance, when you first pick up the books it looks awful, 30ma what? whats a cpc? ohms? waht are they?

but you will soon pick it up when on site working with someone who can talk you through.

i did the couse and jumped in the deep end, straight selfemployed, its hard but am getting there, i have also subed to a guy for 100 a day and learned loads in a week.

i have found that the course does not teach you vital things, ie....how to add a socket without choping to much plaster out and how to run a cable behind plaster with rods etc.

OK cool and thanks again i know i wont be great in 4 weeks or however long it will take me but you cant get experience sitting in the classroom once Ive passed the course I'm going to use my leave and see if anyone will take me on for a week or too so i can get some experience I'm happy to work for free as long as I'm learning
