A possible reason for this was discussed the other day.

Is it overheating?

when i cleaned it out the other day it was working perfict because i hibernate every day, this dell has status lights on the back and they are all green i hope i aint got the shut down virus:S

Probably more like a corrupt system file. Click start, run the enter sfc /scannow and press enter. Insert appropriate disc when prompted. Restart when window dissapears and see how things are.

i would if i could get into it before xp restarts does not work in safe mode

thanks guys i have sussed it out because i use windows backup utility i can back up the system state and luckely i had a recent backup so i restored that and it worked then i ran sfc /scannow and only had 2 or 3 bad files is it repaired them:D
