I can open a terminal window okay. I'm just not familliar with the command line commands in linux

I have no idea how to take a screen grab short of taking a picture of it with my camera.

but treat me like a dumb ass and describe what I do command by command

yes, just to re-iterate, I have an orange button beside my power button, when I press it it turns blue and my wifi is then on,

I discovered this be accident once, when I had turned it off by pressing the 'wrong' power button and then couldnt get on the internet,

it may be that ubuntu turned it OFF on install

ok, there will be a physical button to turn it on, once you turn it on, the OS [ubuntu] should remember and keep it turned on until you turn it off physically again.

Dave, I think key F3 should show Wifi symbol, it does on my Acer, hold shift and press F3 and let go, see if Wifi illuminates

Can't find any bois settings about wi fi power.  F3 and shift £f so nothing.  It must be a software setting to turn it on or off.

get an EDIMAX usb wifi dongle

I might have a spare one I can send you if all else fails.

Yes that's the one. you know I never knew that switch was there, never had to use it.

but the bad news is, pushng it does nothing.

After googling - Its a known issue with the acer

Needs fixing in terminal after having a look to see what the problem is first

Perhaps you can talk me through it?

But what I see on my screen when I try that foirst step does not match with what they say.

Yes, spring loaded, so you slide it along, and when you let go it slides back.  So the sldeways equivalent of a pushbutton switch.
