hi all new to the forum first post so here goes:

i have currently got the loudest bathroom fan in the world lol cant hear a thing when it is on which means when i turn the light on it stays on till the light is switched off, my question is am i right in thinking i can fix this problem by taking the feed from the light to the fan and change it so it goes straight to a fan isolator then from the isolator back to the fan?????? hopefully this will then give my ears a break and also im not really adding to the circuit since the fan is already there appreciate any replies?????

cheers??

Hello and welcome :)

Has it always been so noisy?

Most things you do in the bathroom create a smell or steam and so turning off the fan may not be the best idea. Maybe replace the fan for a quieter model?

TBH it sounds like the bearings in the fan have worn out. I would replace the fan!! I have found the ICON range by Airflow to be the quietest upto now..

Also the fan should be fed through an isolator anyway, you can get pull switch isolators which you might be able to put near the fan on the ceiling.

thanks for reply guys its bit too noisy for me no signs of damage or anything like that probably just my sensitive ears but would like to put an isolator on anyway does how i described seem the correct way ?

thanks for your help

You can do it the way you have described, however it is Part P notifyable...

If it is too loud for your ears then I would honestly consider whether the bearings have worn or if you have Tinitus or something else wrong with your ears.

As I said before the ICON fans are much quieter that all others than I have fitted.

ok thanks for taking time to reply personally hate the way its installed how much more effort would it have took to go through an isolator but hey cant win every time!!!

cheers guys

Am I correct in saying some fans have a live of their own in addition to the live from the light - hence a tripple pole isolator switch may be needed?

Would the fan definately have an over-run if this was the case (when the light was switched off?)

not sure about that just know from the light there is a 3 core going to the fan itself

3 Core Plus Earth Mate
There's gonna be 2 live feeds then, 1 to the fan and 1 from the lightswitch.

The method you suggest of isolation would stop the fan from coming on but isn't true isolation

Fit one of these

But I still think you want to change the fan!

HA HA yeh i do but not sure if i should touch if its notifiable work like i said feed to the fan is coming from the light in the bathroom so my idea was to just change that take it to a fan isolator then from isolator to the fan would that be ok ????

great forum appreciate the help !!!!!

hello Derek..

welcome to the forum

I agree with both You AND the other guys.

1/ IMHO ALL fans should have a fused spur and an isolator switch to allow safe maintenance. and/or turn it off when you don't want it on! :)

e.g. non-switched 3a fused spur & 3-pole isolator switch.

2/ many builders fit cheapo crap fans with rubbish bearings...

check the spec of a decent replacement fan.. a good one with proper oiled bearings will make a gentle hum.. but NOT the sort of noise to keep you awake at night

3/ by the way .. is it a 230v fan or a 12v fan???

HTH

It's a 230 mate I agree u should be able to turn the damn thing off and on at any time ha

If you intend to switch the fan off you may be introducing damp proplems. they are wired to the lights to make sure they keep kicking in . If your fan goes off with the light the timer must be set at zero. Sounds like you need a new one if its that noisy.

A lot of my customers ask for the timer to be set to zero as they can't stand the noise ( must have exceptional hearing) but the point is it should over - run to give it a chance of doing the air changes .

It may not be a timer fan?

could be just a cheepo

cant see anything wrong with going through a fan isolator first especially if it shuts the damn thing up lol no seriously i suppose its not that bad just personal preference really
