"The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 imposes duties on persons involved in electrical work commercially whether employers, the self employed or employees, including most trainees.

Regulation 16 (Persons to be competent to prevent danger and injury) states:

“No person shall be engaged in any work activity where technical knowledge or experience is necessary to prevent danger or, where appropriate, injury, unless he possesses such knowledge or experience, or is under such degree of supervision as may be appropriate having regard to the nature of the work.”

It is stated in the Memorandum of guidance on the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (HSE: 1989) that “the object of the regulation is to ensure that persons are not placed at risk due to a lack of skills on the part of themselves or others in dealing with electrical equipment”.

It continues:

“the scope of ‘technical knowledge or experience’ may include:

(a) adequate knowledge of electricity;

(b) adequate experience of electrical work;

(c) adequate understanding of the system to be worked on and practical experience of that class of system;

(d) understanding of the hazards which may arise during the work and the precautions which need to be taken;

(e) ability to recognise at all times whether it is safe for work to continue.”

true, but where as gas work was banned for the general public, electrical work never has been - a complete failing in Part P legislation.

I have wired sockets etc in the past , Seems silly that i can run a tv cable legally down the wall but not 4mm twin and earth  .

a badly installed TV cable wont kill someone  or burn down the house

you can still install the socket, EAWR is a legal document but it doesnt apply to DIY. 7671 is not law. so you wouldnt be doing anything illegal, however i doubt you would have the test equipment required to ensure that it is safe

DIY gas work is still legal. you only need to be gas safe if you are doing gas work for hire or reward

But you must be qualified to the same standard as someone who is Gas Safe registered.

But Building Regulations state BS7671 should be followed and that is law.  Then BS7671 is only for guidance......

What a mess.

Oh we have Part P, that will improve things????

Sounds very complicated , I was under the impression some diy electrical work could be undertaken ,also that if it was more than a little then it needed checking by a qualified electrician  Just unsure how much .

Maybe just replacing a plug or socket ..Ahh well never mind .

May be easier just to Run the tv cable in the wall .

It is not illegal for a home owner to do any electrical work, if you wanted you could even change your own consumer unit.

However one aspect of the regulations states that all work should be tested in accordance with guidelines and should be recorded with readings available for future reference.

It is this part of the regulations that most DIY'ers would not be in a position to achieve.

all electrical work can be DIY, however some work is notifiable under part p so you would either need to get someone to do the work and notify it or contact LABC and get planning permission and them to inspect it

There are now so many bugs I cannot be bothered to report them anymore. What a mess.

I can see the op and 5 replies. Now I know there are a lot more than 5 replies. I can see Manators recent reply in the activity thread but nothing in the thread. Loads are missing.

looking around, id say almost all of the bugs have already been found and fixed. might be the odd outstanding, but overall the upgrade has been fairly good

would you like Tech Support to pay a visit to essex to teach you how to use a forum?
