Hi all,

I moved into my flat a couple which has an electric boilder and storage heaters. I have previously only used gas central heating so it is all a bit new to me!

Basically there are three heaters in the flat. The first is a small storage heater in the hall way, the second one a panel heater in the bedroom (does not appear to work as a storage) and the third is a large dimplex storage heater in the living room. I can work the bedroom and hall way heater but am having problems with the living room one which I just cannot figure out!

There are two switches located to the left of the heater which seem to be power supplies to the heater. I think one is to use the heater off peak and one peak as and when required.

The switch one the left appears to be the peak one as the heater will work at any time and straight away when I switch this one on but when I switch the other one on and try to use it off peak nothing happens. I know roughly how they work and so understand the heater needs to store heat during the night but despite leaving it on on over night with the input set to 8 or 9 (or indeed any number) it will not store any heat whatsoever like the hall way one. It will as I said earlier work using the other switch any time but of course this is costing me a bomb!

I'm new to storage heaters so I'd be really appreciate any advice or odeas people might have for whats wrong.

Thanks for your help

there should be a cable feed from the storage heater to the switched spur, you will have to open the spur units to see how they are connected.

Switch of mains at the consumer unit first.

Make sure power is off to the switched spurs (fcu). It may have been wired direct to the non

of peak rate wireing.

If there is only the heavy duty 3 core from the heater connected into the one switch, that is the way it is it would have to be inpected if you are not sure of the wireing.

If not sure contact a electrician

Hi melodymaker. You are correct about all your heating. Most likely a thermal trip has operated inside the storage heater, on the night storage part. This is common if the air vents are blocked ( normally by clothes being placed over). Depending on the model ( whats yours ?) there will be either a button to reset or a link that needs replacing, inside the heater at the top. The cover will have to be unscrewed to get to this. Do check all the fuses are ok, or circuit breakers are on at the distribution board. Make sure you turn off both circuits before removing any covers.

bassman you are wrong. You have obviously never seen a combinaton storage heater, which this must be as the OP mentions two flex's are entering the unit. My original points still stands.

Hello Melodymaker welcome to the forum. Are you able to check heater yourself ie have you any electrical Knowledge.

Concur with slips...

Don't these sort of beasties have two separate elements..

the brick heating one..

and a day time convector type heater one?

My only other point would be...

is this a rented property?

and if so would some of this come under landlords responsibilities?? ?:| :|

Manual bi-metal thermal saftey device according to thier spec.

Generally with Dimplex I have found recently on two that when the element goes it trips the the cut out on the charge controller. If it is an old one it will be at the back you should find a little button which clicks back in but then element will need replacing around

I did hear rumours Admin & Admin2 borrowed the horse whip at the weekends??? :O:| ; \cant imagine what for???]:)BlushingB-)
