Hey all!

Getting my new house plastered and decided to tidy up some cables on the wall. There is an old telephone bell which wasn't working that I now know is connected to the current telephone line! I know this cos when I cut the cable I lost a dialing tone!!

So one cable going into the redundant bell is a stand telephone cable (think its five cables in the sheath) and the other cable has 2 wires. Please see attached pics.

Is it just a matter if connecting the 2 wires to the corresponding 2 wires out of the 5 wire cable (if that makes sense!). I just want the telephone bell out the loop as its ancient!

Is it mains running through the 2 wire feed? Never really worked with telephone wiring b4!!!

Hope someone can help!!!

Cant help you too much as i would tone it through ( telephone test kit). All i remember is on the old systems the bells were in series and the speech in parallel so its not a simple case of joining A to B

Also there is no 'mains' there (or shouldnt be)

I assume all I will have to do is the pin 2 and 5 to the wires and that's it? I havnt touched any other phone sockets.

From the look of you picture the main BT incomer was connected to the bell first. Then it looped off to the phones with the multicore.

So how do I cable it minus the bell? Thanks for your help
Your not supposed to touch BT cables/equipmrnt it belongs to them. :_| :( :Blushing :innocent:pray

If the main two incoming cables go to the bell first you need to connect these to pins 2 and 5 on a master socket, all other sockets ran from the master need pins 2,3,5 connecting. BT are supposed to install the master socket but you can buy them from any wholesaler.

Ok it looks like this was an older type system that predated the Master socket set up.

The incoming 2 wire line went to a 3 teminal Block (BT) which had a link. If an extension bell was fitted the link was removed and the bell wired between those two terminals.

Bells were wired in series and speech in parallel.

If doing away with the bell then just reconnect the two that were already linked together ( the Blue + other and Orange + other ) and link the other two, (Green and Brown).
