any clues on how to repair this or what the cause might be ? Manually progressing it is a pain.

turn it off and on again? percussive maintenance?

If it's an old sort with a clockwork programmer it might be the programmer that's died.

If it's an electronic one it might be a sensor that's died.

More information needed.
