I need both!

However there are too many choices of install packages!

rpm, debian, and others so I'm not sure which one to go for!

Thing is the Canon is my fax also, and the Brother is my A3 scanner printer & copier!

I also have 2 HP's I've no got to yet!!!

what model is your printer/scanner

HP is dead simple, most of the drivers are already there, HPLIP , HP allows LINUX to use its files,

install the .deb files is much by far the easiest way,

rpm is if you want to re-compile and modify some stuff

Steps,

The models are in the links, they won't plug and play, Ubuntu is asking for a driver.

I need these 2 before I look at the HP's

Both have Linux drivers but there are so many versions even for Ubuntu 10.04 it seems!

I'll try the .deb files later perhaps, thanks.

This is why I avoid Ubuntu on my production machine, as I have these working under Windoze and without them I'm stuffed!

Once I can install them on the "spare machine" then I can look at them on my secondary boot on my laptop then see about the others etc. the change over will be a long time!!!

deffo use the .deb , they will autorun as such, you need your password.

HP will be flawless, they will either run or will tell you to install HPLIP, which does its own thing, it should be in the repositories AFAIAA .

Applications>ubuntu software centre> then search 'hplip' should already be installed, if not install it and jobs a good 'un

second column, does it not give a deb option?

hang on, Im looking now.

Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions

you need them both ,

download LPR first, then cups,

CUPS is a method of sharing your printer with other machines on your network.

use the deb format, NOT rpm.

I don't need to share the printer through the Linux machine it is on the network already and visible to all the other machines anyway.

I'll try LPR tomorrow!

I have the Canon printing.

Once I have the Brother printing, next is scanning!

Then faxing!

Then the HP's!

Once I have this all sorted I may install a Linix server!...

I just NEED something to replicate MS Exchange accurately desperately! Else I will have to go for an Exchange Server!!!

OHHH NOOOOO! :(

OK I have the 2 printers installed but the Canon will not scan under Ubuntu, nor can I fax direct to it!

Issue: it IS my fax machine!!!

I can fax direct from Windows without printing, looks like can't do this in Ubuntu.

Canon have confirmed.

Got the Brother printing, what a fuss!

Now need to try the Brother scan facility.

BTW I have run up Evolution, very similar to Outlook.

Next I need to find an Exchange replacement.

Have looked very briefly at Zimbra.

Long winded way of importing my emails though!!!

Have you tied the inbuilt scan facility? Cant remember where it is, am on my phone, think its under preferences. BTW, just get HP on future, they release all their code to the developers for compatibility, hence HP drivers inbuilt to Ubuntu.

Steps,

These 2 printers cost me less than 1 HP!

I am not yet sold on Ubuntu, though I have been using it to surf the forum for the last week almost when in the office!

There is no way I can move everything and everyone over to Ubuntu overnight if ever.

Especially as the kids are taught on Windows in school!
