Learnt something important today!

1. Select a suitable place to put up a bathroom fan - be very aware of safe zones. No need to worry about pipes as they are all on the surface.

2. Drill a pilot hole for the taper drill - plaster can be very crumbly.

3. Start drilling - note how hard the brickwork is

4. Use the core drill - and suddenly notice some metalwork

5. Excavate plaster to find initially drilled right through the middle of metal oval conduit!

6. Curse your luck and waste two hours sawing off conduit and repairing the damage you have done! :(

It seemed that someone had removed a water heater, fitted a JB and plastered over it all. Fortunately all the power was off in the extension - but hate to think of the consequences if it wasn't - I don't believe the conduit was earthed.

Think I will be a bit more liberal with my metal detector in future - especially in bathrooms or cloakrooms - and will be buying an RCD plug (obvious really - but we do get a bit careless!).

Anyone else had some near misses!

Drilled a hole for a conduit saddle in the ceiling at a major hospital in Brum. Plain plastered ceiling, no one told me that they have radiator panels plastered in the walls and ceilings, jet of very hot, very black water all over me. OoooH Nooo!!

I drilled throught the wall 4 inches from the sky cable on the inside of the wall but imerged from the same hole on the outside (2.5ft thick stone walls).

Was embarassing :)

Drilled a hole through a very thick wall for a pyro , pyro kept getting stuck so I tell the apprentice who is at the other side, not to poke anything through , I'm having a look through hole, OK he says and blows a great load of dry brick dust into my eye. I have to say that it is really painfull. So was the kick up backside of apprentice !!

Ok I'll admit to a small **** up.

Remember the big red control vehicle that I worked on a month ago.

Well having installed everything for the rear screens, I then had to run more active usb & vga cables into some mdf boxing & up into the roof void back to the servers......... no problems welly the 3" hole cutter through the mdf (in a very cramped under a bench seat location), run in the cables & connect up.....power up the vehicle &

B******S why wont the rear screen power up ?

After removing the bench seat & dismantling the boxing with much effing & jeffing, I find I've cut a 3" length out of the screen power cable & the 12v supply to the smart board.

Didn't even have an apprentice to blame.
