Niece has an i-Phone 4. For Christmas she was bought a clock radio docking station BUT it's for an i-Phone 5C/5S. So is has the 8-way "male" plug on it to go into the phone. I've found this adapter:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lightning-8-Pin-Female-to-30-Pin-Male-Adapter-for-iPhone-4S-iPad-3-iPod-Touch-4/221347929459?rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D286%26meid%3D4407214234536745773%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D1048%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D221348025356%26

But reading it she'd get no audio JUST CHARGING if she got one? Seems the 4S will allow audio but not the 4?

Someone at work reckons there was an issue with some docks where they would play audio but NOT charge.......

I said why not change the clock radio but she said it was a present and she doesn't have the receipt. Not sure on the 3.5mm thing..........

Looking at the adaptors that go the other way,,,,, they all seem to have a 3.5mm jack for the audio
Yes, my link was the only one I could find that had an 8-pin "female" to 30-pin male. Result!...........I thought until I read the small print.

the problem here is apple's decision to change format after using the old 30-pin for so long. basically, the 30-pin had connections for left and right audio, video, usb and charging all in the same connector. the new "lighting" (a usb port with a different connector essentially) only does digital data transfers. a lot of complaints have arisen from this, a lot from the audio and video adapters (video quality took a SEVERE drop with apple's adapter).

in short, i think the only option is the 3.5mm socket that it might have. most do though, in case the owner doesnt have an iphone. it may have bluetooth which could be used, and would cut out the cable, but that is less likely.

Yeah, to be honest, as others have suggested, if there is a 3.5mm jack, plug it into that and it'll work. Either that or find a dock for an original iPhone 4 or 4S. They shouldn't be hard to find, found loads in supermarkets such as Tesco. :)
