Hello chaps,

just a question on initial visit to a job.

how far do you go when inspecting the instilation? do you do a ze or zs?

do you take the cover off the cu/fuse board? or look under the sink for sup bondings?

just wondering if im spending too much time on when customer wants an extra socket etc

thanks

paul

It would always be a good idea to check the basics, although verification of earth could be sorted once you have the job.

Main place to start is with the incommer and the type of cu, you can look for the bonding there, then make a judgement based on what you see.

i have been stung a few times, gone in cu looks ok, priced for a few lights price accordingly,

no bond to water, not to bad sort that, bang lights in test befor making live, stupidly low ir, so now what leave them dead walk off job, convince customer for remidials,

nightmare. not a mistake i will be making again. from now on i will test befor i start on the first day and if somethings wrong charge extra or walk off

As already said by some of the others...

You cannot assume things are in place..

so MUST visually identify Bonding, cable types (e.g. non VR cables)

CU type layout spare capacity,

So need to open CU up to verify which circuits are in use!?

Just been to look at a job, new spur needed for kitchen extract.

Old rewirables, and .85Megohm between L/N +E.

So need to price for install of RCD unit and split tails. But now where does that leave the low IR?? Price for fault finding?? If I didnt get my tester out, I would never have know this and wouldnt have allowed for it.

I think at the very least you need to ascertain what you need to do to bring your part of the installation up to regs. i.e.

RCD

Spare capacity on CU

Bonding in place

Quick Zs doesn't take a minute

At least you can then price accordingly and both you and the customer go in with eyes open.

Hi Bez just wondered where you did the zs test out of curiosity (im training so learning) is it at a local socket and are you doing this just to check the earthing is good ?

Thanks

Just peace of mind really, as I say, if there's a problem I would rather know before I price.

I do the Zs at a couple of points on the circuit I'll be working on.

Dont want to be searching around for a disconnected CPC on my time;)

same as andy really, might do a Zs, write it all down to help me memory, but if there is a problem its all covered in the first paragraph of the quote. Usually let the customer know about any potential problems so they are not too surprised if there is a problem. Customers always understand i cant stay there for hours testing as i have many jobs to look at on that day. This is only for smallish job, a CU change would be different.
