I agree with all the points about not installing inverter in loft (currently havent done any installs yet) but can't decide which provides most risk the inverter in loft issues or having a longer DC cable run? The DC cables worry me a little although they will be labelled I worry that someone might dismiss them as just coax or satellite cable.

How do others protect these DC cables when running down to garage etc? Do you look to take them outside in conduit or similar?

thing is,the first few we done I was actuyally refusing to fit them in lofts,

then it came to a meeting with the MD one day and we decided that if customers were adamant they wanted them in the loft, so be it,

but, ever one we have done so far they have been informed about the effects of heat on them,

and I also put on my sheet about the none accessibility of the DC isolator for emergency switching.

at the end you can only do what the customer specifies, and I dont think Ive broke any laws by fitting them there,

but I await to be educated if I have.

Hi Hefferl,

Me thinks that when garages are talked about, these are predominantly attached, so are no different than any other room in the house(I suspect).

If not attached then care should be taken regarding the equipotential zone issues.

Thanks zjtobo.

I obviously didnt explain myself well enough.

What I wanted to know was if DC cables are being taken from the roof thorugh the inside of a house to a garage or maybe a downstairs room (avoiding installing inverter in loft), how are others mechanically protecting these cables. For safety reasons I'd be inclined to put them in high impact PVC conduit but obviously you cant do this inside a house. So is it a solution to take the dc cables outside the house within conduit

normally outside in conduit,

only done one internal DC cabling job so far and the internal run was loft to landing floor within trunking, labelled both inside and out, cables clearly labelled between every joist(only passed through 2 joists).
