Installing windows help

i have a computer that i want to install XP SP3 onto. the hard drive previously had some version of linux IIRC (i installed it to see what it was like, but never got any further).

i now cant get it to start. it goes so far through startup then says

GRUB loading

GRUB loading, please wait...

Error 17

cant get it to do anything else from there.

i have changed CD drive to boot first, but it seems to skip past this

Any ideas how to get it to start installing?

there is nothing on the hard drive i need to keep, so it can be formatted/whatever needs done

Scrap that. i have found another hard drive that is working straight away

you can delete a thread you created yourself

under the 'thread tools' tab at the top of the first post

GRUB is the Linux loader, you could have got past this by ensuring that your BIOS was set to boot from CD/DVD first, and pressing the space bar at boot up to go into the MS XP loader

it was set to start from CD before HDD. but for some reason, it wouldnt do that. i have found a larger drive what i have decided to use instead. just waiting for that to format now (it takes a long time!). may go back to that drive if i need another computer for somewhere

Possibly your POST is in fast mode, so you'd probably needed to hold down space bar as soon as the first pre-POST text appeared

When your new drive is up and running, slave your old one to it and format from within windows.

Easiest way to sort.

thats what i was planning. now just need to go to computer shop and get another SATA lead for it
