Have just picked up a new pup, which I'm sure Apache will be pleased to know is annoying the cats to hell. Anyway back to a serious(ish) question.

1/ How much do pups of this age sleep (8 weeks), we never seem to get more than about 2 hours of gentle play and wandering about before she crashes out for an hour. Might just be the nature of the pup, she wasn't the most boisterous of the litter, but does seem a bit strange for a jackie.

2/ Can anyone suggest a way of getting peed off cats to befriend pup?? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Have tried to introduce whilst holding claws out of way, but to no great avail - am currently working on hunger to bring cats to general vicinity of pup, but even that is having limited effect. Was considering cat-nip on puppy, but RSPCA might have something to say :)

1. Puppy's sleep a lot. What you describe seems normal. Just be glad you are getting gentle play and not true terrier! :D

2. I would strongly advise clipping the cats claws for the sake of the puppy. I wouldn't try intervening in their relationship, as time goes on the cats will likely become more accepting of the pup.

Good choice of puppy! :D

This thread is nothing without pictures! What have you called the beastie?

What are you feeding him/her on?

Pup's called Ruby, as for food, it is mostly eating a combination of dried puppy food, dog food, and whiskers - she likes the cats dinner, but we are trying to avoid this. Will try to load some pictures later.

Must be a popular name as that is what we called our Vizsla. When you are out on a walk you can't help breaking into song when you shout it's name three times to come back to you :)

No wonder the cats don't like and get on with her. :D

So you have a Yelping Ankle Biter. :|

i have had dogs for nearly 20 years and am currently down from 4 to 2, including a jack russell cross. I took them down to my mums while we went away a couple of years ago and my jack russell went bounding upstairs to menace her cat then quickly came down nursing a very sore eye where she had put him in his place, lucky she didn't whip it right out!. Getting the cats claws done might be an idea, but not being a cat owner, i can't advise further. What i do know is, animals can't really be encouraged to form relationships other than the fact that we are the boss/ pack leader, as the food provider. The programmes dog borstal, and the dog whisperer are always trying to reset that upset balance that causes so many behavioural problems, but lets assume that you have got that bit right. other than that, enjoy. they're lush when they're pups, and the sleeping sounds right. just like kids. mine sleep all day apart from two walks, feed and cuddle in front of the telly. There was a huge change in dynamics when my top dog Patch died 8 months ago. He was a collie lab cross, and kept the other two in line. When he died my spaniel tried to take over and there were fights. i tried to establish some sort of disciplined order, but in the end, they worked it out and have settled down now to a respectful understanding. Never understood how they could fight so much when out, then go to bed and lie all over each other! Enjoy, and thanks to Apache for great advice.

Enjoy the pictures - its difficult to get a good shot when she keeps turning her head at just the wrong moment :D
