I have just recieved the paperwork to renew my jib card. It says that for anyone applying for a jib card or renewing like me u must take a health & safety assesment, i dont remember doing this 3 years ago..

Does anyone renew there JIB cards anymore, im thinking of not bothering.

What are they actually for anyway??

got to book my ECS assessment soon as i find out where the closest test centre is...JIB make you jump through some stupid hoops for what is essentially a jumped up version of a cscs card...

Seems a bit pointless in getting one. Are there any benifits to a self employed person??

It has never left my wallet since having it

Main thing to remember though is that some sites will not let you work on them if you do not have a JIB card.

very rare i go on a site, by sites what do you mean though??, building sites or places like bae systems??

If I remeber correctly under hswa - if 3 or more trades are present at the same time on a job then it is classed as a 'site' even if a domestic refurb !!!!. Ill be renewing mine just in case - lol

There is a form to fill in and advise on new quals, but the 17th is not on the list still just the 16th. Im more upto date than they are!

The assessment ,by the way, takes half an hour , they send you a book with the questions in and its multi-choice, they pick 40 from the book. 95% are obvious answers, I was unsure on the colour bands of different types of fire extinguishers (still am) and the safe angle for a ladder up the wall ( 4m up = 1m out I think)

Now i could understand you not knowing colour bands of fire extinguishers, but not knowing how to put up a ladder?!

and it is 1 in 4

Well I know what looks right, don't I , they were asking for the angle in degrees !! I hav'nt done the square on the hippopotamus since I was at school ( yes I did actually go )
usually between 65 and 75 degrees. but i agree on the 'looks right' part. many ladders have a sticker on the side with a line which is vertical when at the right angle
