Face to face would be better mate. Mail will get put on file or filed in the bin. If you actually meet them they will remember yOu. IMO mate.

thats what i thought filed in bin. i know face to face is best but just wondered if anyone had success without

I agree face to face is best, but how do you arrange that?

When I was starting out I decided my target sector (farmers in my case) and sent a postcard to every farmer listed in yellow pages. My hit rate was about 1 in 100, however this meant that when it came to face to face, I was meeting only people who had a need for my services, as I'm not a salesman, this suited me.

Worked for me!

Any face to face meeting will be enhanced if a covering letter is issued firstly, whilst 95% of them will go in the bin, any self respecting businessman will read them first, when you make any contact later he or she will recall your name (possibly).

the ice will have been broken beforehand saving some awkwardness at a later meeting.

Failing that I find trade fairs a good place to meet on an informal level, in a relaxed and common ground.

The other way is to get your name known. If I wanted to appeal to farmers I would maybe sponsor a class at the local auction mart, or at-least get a poster up there!

For the domestic market local parish magazines are a good way of getting local work.
