cheers andy that clears things up and makes things easer as when customers ask to change one pendant to 4 down lights but wont pay for an rcd

 
I`m going to disagree.......

IF you are extending / altering the existing cct, e.g. by addding downlights, I would have said that, even though your new bit of addition may not, by itself, require RCD protection under std. regs, you have modified the circuit. Therefore, AFAIAC, you should be ensuring that the cct you have altered is to 17th.

(my opinion, anyway)

n.b. the question is...If anything were to go awry, would you be prepared to justify & defend your position in a court of law?
