Hello
After 2 failed attempts at B&Q and Screwfix I’ve turned to the internet for help and found this forum.
I have a switch that needs replacing. There are three different switches that can turn off 2 light fittings (all on or all off).

The switch to be replaced has L1,L2,L3 and L4 on the back.

B&Q gave me incorrect info and switch (single light switch 2 way).

I worked out I need intermediate based on what’s on the back of my old switch.

Screwfix suggests an intermediate switch but it only has 2xL1 and 2xL2 inputs on the fitting.

I’m assuming this is incorrect as well?

Can anyone advise on the right switch?

Appreciate your help and where I could buy from?

Any intermediate switch will be interchangeable with any other intermediate switch. What you have observed is different labelling conventions, which makes things confusing. So, put the two wires which were at the top of the old switch into the two top terminals of the new one, and similarly the bottom ones and all will be well.

What you have learnt is that there is NO standard convention for label identification of terminal connections on light switches!!

Each manufacturer has their own preferences, which may or may not match the make of the switch that you are replacing...

All you need to know is that:-
"One-Way" switches have two terminals.
"Two-Way" switches have three terminals. {and can be used as a One-Way switch.}
"Intermediate" switches have four terminals. {and can be used as a One-Way or Two-Way switch.}

But in ALL cases how the terminals are labelled is up to the manufacture!!
It could be any combination of , 1,2,3,4,Com,C,L1,L2,L3,L4,IN1,IN2,OUT1,OUT2 etc.. etc.. etc...

However there should always be a bit of paper illustrating how it should be wired i.e. what each terminal actually does.

The key thing is looking for the words "One-Way", "Two-Way" or "Intermediate" in the product descriptions.
